Weekend Warriors: Holiday Arts Adventures III: Holiday with a Vengeance

I tend to think of the holidays as a season that spans Thanksgiving to New Year’s. I hate the letdown of a big build-up to just a single day, so I’m a fan of extended celebrations. You know, the 12 Days of Christmas and all that.
So I love seeing how art events — both holiday-themed and not — continue past Christmas Day and into early January. My family and I will probably sneak out for final looks at the Christmas lights and holiday train displays. On Wednesday, Dec. 26 we can rock our faces off with the annual visit from Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
We still haven’t seen Mickalene Thomas’ I Can’t See You Without Me exhibition at the Wexner Center. It closes after Dec. 30! While we’re there, we’ll definitely visit Art & Ecology, an exhibition from central Ohio high school students exploring environmental challenges to our planet.
In our wanderings, we inevitably end up at the North Market, where we can see the latest exhibition on the mezzanine level. This month’s pieces, titled Experiencing North Market, are created by artists from Open Door Art Studio. Catch it before Dec. 31!
We can barely keep up with the musical offerings of Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza. I swear, there’s music every single night. On Thursday, Dec. 27 they’re hosting a songwriter showcase with Carole Walker, Barry Weaver and Dustin Vincent, all led by Eric Gnezda. We may hit that up to experience some great local talent.
Finally, we can always use a visit to the Columbus Museum of Art. They recently opened an exhibition titled Back of the Bus, featuring children’s book illustrations by Floyd Cooper depicting Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her bus seat.
