Throw Yourself Upon Your Stiffness and Take Up Your Pen
Leonard Cohen was an amazing poet and songwriter, not to mention a remarkable man. Very sad that he died but glad I finally discovered him. It took me a long time. I think his at-first-perceived lounge music kept me away. After reading a new memoir by Eric Lerner and getting to know more about Cohen on a personal level I was more prepared to invest myself in his music. His melodies and hooks are good but the lyrics always get me. Cohen was also such a charming man and it is not surprising to me that he would attract women. I do not know what prevented him from sustaining a long-term relationship unless he never met the one woman who could satisfy his longing. Or perhaps it was something lacking in Cohen’s character.
My wife has been away in California now for eighteen days. She was supposed to return today but complications arose and for the time being our plans have been put on hold. Yesterday I was getting excited for her return but in the middle of the night she texted me that she would not be on the plane and heading home to me. Rather than allowing myself to fall into despair and become disenchanted again with my sadly chaotic life I will practice my writing, play my guitar, perform any needed maintenance around the base camp or our Ollie, and entertain Bob the dog. Sometimes life is sad. It certainly is unpredictable. But I am lucky to have had Beverly in my life at all. And it is good to feel grateful. Perhaps it is because I find myself lacking in so many ways that I sometimes perceive myself abundantly lucky.
