At tonight's joint #CapeTownMaleVoiceChoir and #CENESTRAMaleChoir concert—the grand finale of our #Melodia! South American Music Festival—Quinto de Cantares will premiere the latest commission from CM's #EricDanielHelms New Music Program: Oscar Escalada's arrangement of Misa para el Tercer Mundo ("Mass for the Third World") by Argentine priest Padre Carlos Mugica. In 1974, Mugica's setting was recorded by #RCA Victor, but the military government forbid its dissemination, burning all 50,000 pressings, as well as the master tapes. Three months later, Father Mugica was assassinated outside his own parish. #ClassicalMovements 🇦🇷 (at La Plata, Buenos Aires)

In 2014, the Choir of the College of William and Mary and the Botetourt Chamber Singers (under the direction of Dr. James Armstrong and Dr. Jamie Bartlett, respectively) traveled to the Baltics and Finland on a 15-day tour, performing the European premiere of Estonian composer Piret Rips-Laul’s Salve Regina, commissioned by Classical Movements’ Eric Daniel Helms New Music Program. In Turku, Ms. Rips-Laul was able to hear her 14-part work performed live for the very first time, and Salve Regina was well-received at every stop along W&M’s tour: Turku, Vilnius, Riga, Tartu, Tallinn and Helsinki.

"Let the Children Decide"

Serendipitous guests of the mayor of Johannesburg, Neeta Helms and Johan van Zyl, CM's director of international projects, were box-seated next to the brilliant composer Mokale Koapeng--an Eric Daniel Helms New Music Program commission for our 2012 Ihlombe! South African Choral Festival. Listen to how musically Mokale just speaks the lyrics to "Letlang Bana" here, and you can imagine how gorgeous "Let the Children Decide" sounded with the Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society in Regina Mundi RC Church in Soweto. (FYI: The home team, Orlando Pirates Football Club, lost to Bloemfontein Celtic F.C., 2-1...and we are commissioning Mokale again in 2017!)
