5 random facts

i've answered 5 random things a couple of times so, this time i am trying the theme of health / injury stuff that i have experienced.
more after the break:
when i was 5 years old, i had my tonsils out and i remember enjoying all the ice cream. before the return visit to the doctor my mom was shocked to find me eating nacho cheese dorito corn chips and she was concerned that i may have damaged my throat eating those chips. never had a problem and my throat healed up fine.
i broke my arm in the summer of summer of 1976. we were on vacation in Dallas and my parents were kind enough to bring my best friend with us. they has 1 hotel room for my 2 sisters and mom and dad and then 1 hotel room for me and my friend. he and i were jumping from bed to bed and i landed on my back on one of the beds and he came down on my right arm, breaking it at the wrist. my dad brought me to the hospital and got my arm set and in a cast. i never got in trouble for this incident.
in the fall of 1976, i was playing high school basketball and the guy in front of me stepped back and his head hit my nose, breaking my nose. to have it set correctly, the ENT doctor said i had to be put under anesthesia and so i was put under and they packed my sinuses with some gauze stuff that stayed in for a week or more.
in early 2005, i had pain in my right shoulder. went to my doctor and he gave me anti-inflammatory (mobic) and muscle relaxer (flexeril). i continued to exercise and run 6 to 7 days a week. the pain got worse and i went back to my doctor and he gave me stronger pain reliever (hydrocodone) and muscle relaxer (soma) and had me take some xrays and cut back on exercising. xrays didn't show an issue, so he had me get an MRI. the MRI showed that i had a ruptured disc between C6 and C7. doctor referred me to a orthopedic doctor. saw the orthopedic doctor and he said if i took it easy on exercise and running for about 6 weeks that i should be ok. i did what he said and i did have significant nerve damage down my right arm and into my right hand. healed up slowly by exercising more low impact bicycle workouts and stairmaster and step mill and slowly got back to doing weight machines and regaining strength.
early in 2009, i had pain in my right hip and started to limp. resisted going to the doctor for several months, thinking it would get better if i just stopped exercising for awhile. so i quit running and just did elliptical and cycling and weight machines. i felt weakness in my hip when standing on my right leg by itself. finally went to the doctor and they sent me for xrays and immediately referred me to orthopedic (around June 2009). the ortho doctor said i had 2 choices, total hip replacement or birmingham hip replacement. i was in shock and asked how long i could delay without further permanent damage. the ortho installed the birmingham hip in September, 2009 and i was able to resume exercising 6 weeks after the surgery. since then, i have exercised and gained strength and completed several obstacle / mud runs.
