The Beginner of Worlds 1

“How can I make known the worlds lonely in my mind?”

The young Ernie seeved and heaved to ponder this, clutching to his mother for love to be held. The she-Ernie hyed him close and spoke soft as a hushing song.

“My child, who carries forward my name and the weight of mine own heart. There is within thoo a World of feeling, much to be yoked to one so young. If I could bear both the two of our hearts for us, I would. When thoo were born, I could not hold the weight of one heart, so I cried to Seeftsome Bower and Ruth her dear daughter that they lift such weight from me. You, so young, heard my beans and gave me such care, took from me my sorrow and made in thy mind Worlds wherein thoo had strength to hold it all.” 

The young he-Ernie could not speak. What next words must come could not be thought: that he from first breaths wanted nothing more than for his mother to be free of Ruth’s hold, to nevermore know grief. It was known to him that it was Good to help those one loves, that many gods find love for those who live in bede to kin. It was a gospit (<godsbid? lol), a godly bidding, and many Shossles, Curses, and Hoaxes lived to take fee from those failing.  How could anyone say what was next said?

“My child, my love,” said the mother, “would that I had found some other Where for that weight, that thoo may have been free of that care, from the Fear of the dwining of the one meant to keep thee sound and whole. The Work I owed to thee thoo did for me.”

His heart sped as the flitterbird, and he could not hold each thought more than a blink. He did not wish to.

“A’morrow I have set myself to yoke to an easterly wain, bound for Ruth’s bedehouse. There shall I seek answers(???) to know what Shossles whisper to thee now, what Hoax was bid to see to my bean. I would know, so if Ruth grants not to take them back, I may shout it from its hiding place and fight it for my Soul.”

His heart was fit to burst, his belly quick to leap. He said, “Take me ‘longs.” 

“No.”

The World fell away and he wept like their Grandmother Rain, clung to her as fast as a thorn.  “Do not go!” he said. “Leave me not! Keep me sound!” He tore her dress with nails, and sobbed yuck upon her lap.

She had thought her not to leave him wretched, loneful and befreaked. His aching now, his sorrow, ached her further.

“My son, I sh’ll take thee ‘longs. My sorries to give such fright. Let us pack to go. You are my care until the end of my days.”
