I'm of the opinion that if you think the Volo's errata is good or "a step in the right direction" you are actually incapable of nuance and compelling storytelling.

The alignments have always been a guideline. There can be and have been morally good characters of traditionally evil races. An evil character can grow to reevaluate their worldview and change. An evil character can decide to do good things if it is in their best interest. Do you know why it's good to have things that are typically evil? Because not every encounter has to be a moral dilemma. Sometimes you will have encounters where all that is needed is to clobber the bad guys. There can be nuanced and multifaceted characters, but for God's sake I shouldn't have to consider every implication of clearing out the goblin nest that is routinely raiding this small village.
