There’s a pause, a moment of pure hesitation and he’s stuck in how to answer that question. He knows how his attitude is being portrayed but how else did they expect him to act? There were no signs of his mourning. No signs of the way he handled his father’s murder as correct. Was there even a correct way to mourn a loved one? He had never known loss like that. He had never felt the sting of watching someone he t r u l y cared for die in front of his eyes. Nor had he ever felt so hopeless. Maybe this was his way of actually coping with that.

“Sarah- don’t be alarmed, but I believed we’ve broken down.”
This would have been less alarming in general were they not, for instance, on the run from the entirety of the FBI and local law enforcement. The girl tied up and occasionally coherent enough to kick at the confines of the trunk was also perhaps a bit of an issue. Then again, were he captured, Joe supposed it would hardly matter to add one more kidnapping (or likely, by that time, murder) to the list of his crimes.
That was the problem with putting a man on death row- suddenly, he had nothing at all to lose.
Joe turned to Sarah, frustration evident in his expression. “I don’t suppose you have a hidden talent as a mechanic.” Perhaps they ought to just start pushing the car off the road now and begin walking. A phone call would ultimately bring someone to their rescue. This was not necessarily a disaster.

13. Wild West
The news that a U.S. Marshal had ridden into town came as little surprise to most of the residents. They were all accustomed, you might say, to certain outlaw parties of a certain type with the tendency to vanish when the law made an appearance. This was a song and dance that had played through before, and now here it went again.
The marshal seemed to have a specific target in mind this time when he strode up the steps and into the local saloon, his walk much more purposeful than swagger, but he didn’t do more than glance around the room when he stepped inside, making straight for the bar and ordering a whiskey, straight-up.
It was only after he’d knocked back three, the first a quick burn down his throat and then the second two in easy sips, that he turned to the woman a few stools away down the bar and offered her a friendly smile. It’d go further if his gaze wasn’t so sharp, watching her more closely than the situation warranted, but the smile was genuine. “Evening, ma’am. I was wondering if you might be able to point me in the direction of the outlaw I’m tracking. Seems he tends to circle back to this town more than most.”
"Are you breaking up with me?"
“Breaking up with you? I hardly know you!”
