Ugh...we have windows 11 on our laptop and our PC finally was able to upgrade. Sure wish I'd checked into how it handles Sims 3 BEFORE updating. I had zero problems the first several days and apparently I already had the dreaded 22H2 because I can't roll back, only go back to Windows 10 which is a hassle because our writing software is now on Windows 11.
Yippee it's like playing roulette on whether or not I'll error 16 and then on whether the trick or deleting .bad saves while the game is minimized will work. I'm running on compatibility set to windows 8 which has helped and I've disabled my One Drive and Microsoft Teams, but today I noticed that both programs restarted themselves DESPITE being toggled off when my got the code 16. While I was searching my task manager both programs closed again. Does anyone know what is up with that!? I really can't completely uninstall One Drive or Microsoft Teams as we need them for writing and work respectively. I am getting so sick of this. I have literally NEVER had an error 16 happen in this game before! Oh btw at some point several of my saves got eaten again and I had to copy over a meta file. Thankfully that worked for all affected saves, but I hate playing and not knowing if it's going to actually save!
Error Codes can happen when the save file is too big, or the device system has unavailable resources to continue the gameplay. Below we're sharing a few tips to help prevent these Error Codes.
Turn off unnecessary programs through Task Manager. Extra programs eat up the memory the game needs to run.
In-game, always make sure to use Save As, instead of just Save or Save and Quit. Saver is a handy mod that pops up every 30 minutes by default, reminding you to save under a new name. Make sure to save from Map View.
Keep very few files in your Saves folder. Our suggestion is to keep only one or two needed ones.
Regul Save Cleaner to clean up your save files.
Reduce the graphic options in-game.
Reduce gaming time - play for up to two hours. Fully close the game. Remove unnecessary items (generated cache files and Save files except the last one made). Start your game again. This should prevent issues like memory leak.
For Error Code 16, make sure to get Porter to pack up your family, their house and move to a new town for a fresh start.

–Check Online Storage: Uninstall, disable or pause syncing with any services you normally use, such as OneDrive, Google Drive or otherwise.
These services move your game files from \Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 to where your game can't see them anymore. And can cause issues like what you've shown.
–Before doing anything with OneDrive or GoogleDrive, if you have Sims 3 files there, copy them back to the C:\Users\Username\Documents\Electronic Arts folder.
Then turn off, disable or uninstall the service. This way the game will be able to access your Sims 3 files again and won't move them.

–Delete the files out of the CurrentGame.sims3 folder. (\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\CurrentGame.sims3) if there are any. If files are left in this folder after a crash it will cause continued loading/saving issues.
–Move most of your Save-games out of the Saves folder. (Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Saves) Either delete them, or move them onto a folder on your desktop or usb key. Reason being having too many save-games in your Saves folder can cause saving issues.

Yeah, I took what was likely an asinine approach to working with that Error Code 16.
I just saved the game again, then went into the folder and got rid of the .bad file.
I've done it that way before, and the game ended up playing fine afterwards (funnily enough, it also involved Guillaume and Landon).
Of course, I'll check for sure what the extent of the damage was next time I start the game up. If it's too messed up to play, well, I always have the backup file.
And if that doesn't work, well, I still have the two of them in the bin, so I can always start over with them.
Error code 16 or as it is described as "The directory cannot be removed" is a system error that comes with the message "ERROR_CURRENT_DIRECTORY" 0x10. This problem occurs when a device is not fully accessed by the system causing it to work with limited functions. Windows NT and Windows XP users are usually the ones affected by this error.
To anyone experiencing this problem, I finally fixed this big by doing the following: 1. Create a new email (Gmail is recommended). 2. Go to swtor.com and log in. 3. Change your Basic Information in the My Account tab. 4. Enter in your new email address. 5. Validate the account as soon as you get the email. 6. Play as much as you want. The reason for this email change is because there is a bug with emails related to an EA account.
