When on an escalator, which side are you supposed to stay on if you're standing still (not walking up/down to go faster)? Which side of the road do cars drive on in your country/region?
Escalators: stand on the RIGHT to let others pass. Cars: drive on the RIGHT.
Escalators: stand on the RIGHT to let others pass. Cars: drive on the LEFT.
Escalators: stand on the LEFT to let others pass. Cars: drive on the RIGHT.
Escalators: stand on the LEFT to let others pass. Cars: drive on the LEFT.
I'm not familiar with this escalator rule at all

The Crystal Mall has been purchased by General Dynamics, a war contractor that our government pays to build nuclear submarines & jets for us so that we can go terrorize some other country instead of feeding the hungry here at home. Anyway, General Dynamics says most mall operations will end at the end of March, but a few businesses will be accommodated past that point.
Those brushes on the side of an escalator are not for cleaning your shoes. They are safety brushes. They help push your feet, clothes, bags, or laces a little away from the skirt area, which is the side panel next to the moving steps. That side area is there because the escalator needs a fixed wall around the moving steps and inner machinery, and the steps also need a tiny gap so they can move smoothly without rubbing and getting stuck. If that side panel was not there, the moving parts would be more exposed, which would be much less safe. And if there was no small gap, the steps could scrape the sides, causing friction, damage, or jams. So the gap is necessary, but the brushes help remind people not to stand too close to it.
