The Great Escape, or how plans don’t always go to plan.
Theory: Create a War Rig 'B' crew. This is a back-up team of younger, less experienced Lancers that will ideally create a pool of supplemental War Rig Lancers to draw from in case of injury or death. Turn off the regular crew in favor of the B crew on an easy, routine Gastown run that happens to coincide with the full or near-full moon for optimal night driving conditions. When the regulars complain, say it’s for ‘training’.
Have Capable, Cheedo, and the Dag dress as War Boys (boots, white clay, balaclavas, goggles, overalls). With Furiosa acting as Imperator in charge to intimidate the bridge guards, escort Toast, and Angharad over to the War Boys Tower. Meanwhile, the War Boys load the War Rig. Furiosa sneaks the Wives into the hold after it's fully loaded and inspected but before it's brought down on the lift. Go to Gastown, and trade the tankful of water for guzzoline, filling the empty gas pod. Lose the War Rig ‘B’ Crew in Gastown using a ruse and then drive off after the War Boys fill the guzzoline but before they get back on. Take the guzzoline to the Rock Riders and trade for free passage. Plant explosives in/under the gas pod in case of double-cross by the Rock Riders.
Execution: The wives don't just use the white to cover up, they use some of the white to leave a message to Immortan Joe. Otherwise, everything goes as planned right up to the moment that Furiosa realizes that individual members of the regular War Rig crew such as Morsov and the Ace have snuck on anyway, despite Furiosa's orders to the contrary.
This throws the plan off because it means the War Boys will go into the hold for produce, because usually they trade both food and water for guzzoline, but Furiosa was planning to tell the inexperienced ‘B’ crew that they were only trading water at Gastown, which would be drawn externally without accessing the hold. Then once they go off-road, Furiosa's bad luck kicks into high gear with Buzzards, sand storms, and shit-kicking blood bags.
Found a version of this in my Citadel/War Boy society file today and further refined it. Just some thoughts on a possible method of escape.
This post is partially thanks to tfuriosa (I hope this is the right person?) for the very lovely review on Vulnera; it made me remember I have a worldbuilding file that I’ve been using to refine ideas.
Also, yo! icarus-suraki ! We talked about some of this recently.
