The Joy of Texts

Papyri with sigils by wild-eyed mages,

Grimoires in bat’s blood on smooth vellum pages,

Emerald tablets just salvaged from wrecks:

These are a few of my favourite texts.

When I’m bored as hell,

I simply remember my favourite texts,

And find an invoking spell.

Spirits of pharaohs with sceptres and maces,

Dark apparitions with animal faces,

Winged demonesses with whom you have sex,

Feature in most of my favourite texts.

When the moon shines, when the owl calls,

When Anubis bays,

I open one more of the favourite texts,

And then I don’t feel so… crazed.
