I want to go to a rabbit cafe, so I looked for one in my area, which lead me to a bunch of exotic animal cafes, which reminded me once again that, much as I love Japan, the way they treat animals is infuriating. You can buy wild animals like prairie dogs, sugar gliders, and otters pretty much anywhere. The pet store might give you some “tips” about caring for them, which are almost always wrong (“you can feed otters cat food.” “They don’t mind being in small spaces, so leaving them in a cage is okay”). There’s no culture of educating oneself on best practices, so pet owners don’t recognize signs of distress or illness, leading to unhappy and sickly animals. Most of the cafes I looked up keep animals in small cages unless interacting with customers, and you can bet diet is inadequate or downright unhealthy. One cafe that calls itself “otter friends” has otters and NO WATER. Can you imagine?! Fuck!!
