Same anon. Thanks for the answer. Well, this is actually that the whole "not blood related" is because in japanese culture, people are considered to be related strictly through blood. Which is why so many anime and dating simulator have a "actually you aren't related" and that asian folks doesn't view calling someone "brother or sister" as committement to anything. This is because in japan and other asian country, the adoption system is completely different. When someone is adopting a child, we call it a "special adoption" while a regular adoption is when a father in law "adopts" his son in law, not as his child, but as his heir. It's called the koseki system. This leads to a rather hostile view on adopting children since it's like accepting a stranger in your house and this mentality is still very present. For example, if you go to the jpn side of the Fates fandom, they really don't view it as pseudo incest that Corrin can marry the Nohrian or Hoshidan royals. I am not defending that, merely explaining why the trope exist. This only means that to IS, Nel isn't related to Alear however. So she bonding with Veyle wasn't seen as engaging her and Alear or Veyle into being related at all. In fact Nel states that she isn't related to them in their support. Also, Anna never mentions marrying Alear when she grows older, that's a misinformation. In the japanese version of the S support she offers Alear a gift as a sign of friendship.
I understand that some S support can be off putting but in reality they can all be explained by how they come from. Anna being an S support is only so that the younger player can give something to a character their age. As for Nel, well I explained it previously but also, the notion of mutliversal sibling doesn't exist since multiverse doesn't exist either. I get why you'd find it weird but unlike the S support, the fact Nel (and Rafal) are optional romance means they aren't related else they wouldn't have allowed it. After all, they didn't do it with Veyle. If Nintendo greenlit this, this means that in the originating country it was seen as ok. Like IS allowing you to marry two cousin only comming from how in japan and many other place in the world, cousin marriage is legal.
It kinda got long, I am sorry. I totally understand where you are comming from, but as I said, while I don't agree with IS's decision, I can at least understand where it does come from
Thanks for the response. This is a lot of cultural context stuff that I don't truly have any rebuttal to because, yeah it's not my culture and I don't want to overstep.
I do think there is still an inconsistency in the internal logic of things. For the game to present Lumera+Alear and the hounds as family and then not treat Nel, Rafal, and the main game dragons the same still feels weird to me in a way that intellectually doesn't fit. I still do feel that it's probably a product of laziness in that they didn't want to spoil Alear's parentage which means the supports were handcuffed and couldn't speak as plainly.
Ultimately tho it is what it is I suppose? I won't get too worked up over it at this point. But it's an aspect of the writing that bugs me.
Regarding your essay on Engage, about the bit of how Alear S supporting Nel ruins the "found family theme". I don't really agree. Yes they share different version of the same father and have similar trauma however Nel was in love with her Alear. Even if she sees our Alear differently, she still can't view them as a sibling because of this. And I don't think using Sombron knowing the source of trauma she was to him is a good idea since she and Alear tried to distance themeselves from him. Veyle is a different story, she is Alear's actual sister and she still see Sombron as family, so even if Nel is from another version of Sombron, it would make sense for her as she keep seeking for a way to compensate the absence of her siblings. That's not Nel's case. She actively avoid such relationship. I also don't think they were trying to go "Nel and Rafal are part of Alear last siblings" because there are things that are portrayed as different from the early DLC : Sombron being born in Elyos in the DLC world and having a different goal, Sombron refering to his children as failure rather then defect, the fact all children are born as twins, etc. And above all, Nel S support isn't canon in the slighest. Yet the story don't really try to tease a siblinghood between her and Alear, unlike for Veyle. You could argue it's because of the S support they did it that way, but this lack of siblinghood and feeling of kinship is imo the reason why I don't think it's damaging the family theme.
Also slight side note but Anna's S support wasn't romantic in the japanese version as well.
(I have not gotten all the associated flavor texts on Nel's interactions and comments through the reveal chapters of the main story yet, so this is going to be based on having played the dlc and done the supports. This might be long and possibly redundant with my essay lol. Also typing on phone rather than computer, so sorry for typos and bad grammar.)
