When Peaches Fly
established dean/cas, toddler jack, fluff :)
written for day 5 of @one-more-offbeat-anthem's follower celebration || prompt: farmer's market
“Hi Krista.” Cas transferred his cloth bags to his other hand—tomatoes, mason jars, bell peppers, and corn on the cob bumping against his leg—and reached for Jack’s hand. The five-year old poked at the peaches, plums, and apricots lined up at a precarious angle on Krista’s stand. “Jack, careful.”
Straightening up from behind the stand with a crate of fruit, Krista beamed at them. “Hey, Cas, hi, Jack! How’s it going?”
“I got a donut!” Jack told her. Remains of the powdered pastry on his face proved this fact true, and Cas licked his thumb, then wiped at Jack’s cheek. Jack squirmed away. “And we’re having burgers tonight!”
“Sounds like fun. Claire come with you today?”
“She’s coming later,” Jack said. “She has a…” He peered up at Cas, squinting a little. “Prior obligation.” He stumbled over the words a little, but Cas nodded at him. In truth, Claire and Kaia were on a hunt, but after too many concerned calls from teachers, they’d managed to explain to Jack why that information couldn’t be shared with everyone.
“She’ll be staying with us—Jack, no.” Cas tugged a little at Jack’s hand as Jack tried to grab a plum. “She’ll be staying with us for a few days.”
“Aww, I’m glad she could come visit.” Krista gestured to her stand. “Looking for anything in particular? Or just browsing?”
“Just browsing,” Cas said. “I believe Dean wanted fruit to make a pie for tonight.” Looking for Dean, he scanned the center town square where the weekly farmer’s market took place, small tents and wide tables quickly becoming obscured by the growing crowds. They always had plans to arrive early to avoid the worst of the crowds, but unfortunately, mornings did not always agree with him. And this morning Dean had been particularly persuasive to stay in bed longer.
hey-o!! maybe.... some Destiel fluff :3 in the form of OOH FALLING ASLEEP TOGETHER ON THE COUCH. thank you!!! you’re the best ✨💕💖💗✨
nope!!! YOU are the best 🦄🦄🦄 here is some fluff for you, ya-fren!!
***
"The couch isn't big enough for the two of us."
And as a matter of fact, Cas is correct.
"We aren't going to fall asleep." Dean argues, scrunching his face into a scowl, and jutting out his chin indignantly. That makes his hair bounce, and Cas's eyes flicker up for a moment, and Dean's not entirely unpleased by it.
"You know we are." Castiel frowns back, glaring at Dean, eyebrows netted in his signature 'I'm right' stance. "We always do."
"Do not!"
"I'm not going to say 'do too', and we're not playing this game -" Cas throws back, squinting.
"Do not." Dean mutters, because he can't not do it.
Cas rolls his eyes. "I hope you know you're being ridiculous. I get that you, for some reason unknown to me, adore this couch, but last time we fell asleep on it, you got a crick in your neck and I had backache, and -"
"Way to make us sound ancient, Cas." Dean grumbles, cutting him off.
"We are ancient!"
Dean bites his lip. "Are not."
"Oh, for Christ's sake -" Cas starts, inhaling a breath long enough to sustain his entire monologue about to come, when Dean holds his hand up, stopping him.
"Well, how about this? To ensure we don't fall asleep watching TV, let's keep talking too, huh?" He suggests, hopefully.
"About what?" Cas demands, still standing, now with his hands on his hips.
"Maybe how maple walnut flavor's better than honey for ice cream." Dean shrugs, the picture of innocence with a sweet smile and raised eyebrows.
There's only so many times Cas can be the voice of reason. Sometimes, he has to be the voice of the truth.
"Maple walnut does not even -" He starts, passionately, sitting down at once. Dean puts his chin in his palm, and pretends to analyse Cas's rant like it's a debate, as he settles in closer to him.
He doesn't even like Maple Walnut all that much.
Clearly, the best flavor of all, ever, is Apple Pie.
*
They're both snoring, half an hour later. Dean has his head on Castiel's stomach, so his neck will be fine, but his knees are propped up on the armrest, so that's not great for when he tries to stand up.
Castiel has his hands around Dean, but his legs are under him, with all of Dean's weight on them; so he's going to wake up hurting, and will possibly have to be carried to the bedroom by Dean at a later hour - but at least now, he won't fall for a ice-cream debate the next time.
Or so he thinks.

CONVERSATION (656 words)
tags: deancas, season 14, kind of a coda, but doesn’t necessarily fit in one certain place
Dean started pacing the place the second Cas’s text came through. He ignored the strange glances from all the new hunters living in the bunker, but when Sam’s annoyance changed to looks of concern, Dean took the hint. He went outside to pace the street instead.
He’d done it before when Cas was away on whatever the hell he went off to do. Walking the street up and down got the energy out and made the pounding in his chest seem normal. But Dean had never had to wait for Cas like this, when he was off enjoying a bonding trip with someone else, even if it was Jack..
Jack needed someone, and Dean knew it. He tried to give him what he could, and hoped Sam and Cas filled in the rest. And maybe Jack did need Cas more than he needed anyone else. If he’d call anyone his father, it was Cas, and they all knew it.
But they hadn’t discussed it–or anything else–before Cas and Jack took off for their father/son hunting trip. There was so much to say, and they could never get anything out over the phone. Dean had to make an effort not to pray anymore, but sometimes it happened in his sleep when he felt most alone. All it did was torture Cas when they were too far apart to solve the problems between them.
Dean saw the truck from a ways off and his heart stopped for a moment before thudding painful hard and fast in his chest. He needed to see Cas. He had to know he was okay.
Cas slowed and stopped next to Dean, squinting out at Dean past Jack in the passenger seat. “What are you doing?”
“I don’t know. Nothing wrong with waiting to greet someone after a trip.” Dean shrugged, hoping he actually looked as nonchalant as he was trying to be. “I was just, you know. Doing that. But you’re back now. So might as well pull around.”
Dean smiled. Jack looked at Cas, then at Dean. “I can do that for you, Cas.”
Cas got out and slammed the driver’s door shut while Jack slid across to the driver’s seat. “Take it slow,” Cas said. “Don’t knock the mirror off again.”
“I mean, if you do I’ll just fix it,” Dean said. “Again.”
Jack rolled his eyes, but pulled forward slowly.
“Dean, what’s wrong?”
“Can’t a guy just wanna…” Dean tried the usual charming smile, but it slid from his face. Cas was home, and well, and everything was okay. Dean slipped one hand between his suit jacket and the white dress shirt he always wore, the fabric familiar and soothing. Cas moved with him and Dean captured him with his other arm. Their bodies pressed against each other like they had so many times before and Dean luxuriated in the feel of Cas in his arms again after so long.
Cas caught his eye, and Dean stared, mute again in his presence.
“Something’s wrong,” Cas said. “Tell me.”
Dean kissed him instead. He wasn’t good with words around Cas. His brain slowed down and his usual quick wit refused to emerge. He’d given up years ago. He could say everything he needed to say with this kiss and Cas would understand.
Dean held him desperately close as they kissed, and didn’t let go even after their lips parted. He buried his face in Cas’s shoulder and tried to breathe slow and deep to get his heart rate under control. Part of him hadn’t been sure Cas would want to touch him ever again–not after he’d willingly chained himself to another angel and put the entire world in jeopardy again. When Cas grasped the back of his neck and held him there, Dean finally let go of the worry he’d been carrying. They could talk later. For now they’d said everything that had to be said.
