Summary:
“Um,” Wu Xie glanced back at Xiaoge. "What did the man say about this place? It was haunted or was it cursed?”
Pangzi sighed, not knowing why he asked Xiaoge. Half the time he never answered, anyway. “Haunted, cursed. Who cares, it’s a recurring theme with these old tombs. We made it all the way out here to look, right Tianzhen?”
Wu Xie arched a brow, snorting. “Look at it or find some treasure?”
“Look around, find some treasure… I mean, is there really that much of a difference?”
Wang Pangzi Week 2021
There were times… not often, but times Pangzi wondered if Wu Xie was jinxed.
Now, there were different levels of jinxed. For example, Liu Sang level of jinxed... which was altogether different in his mind and he mostly said it to annoy the kid. But it didn’t reach the level of what Wu Xie could cause.
He was more along the lines of pure bad luck.
Not bad in the sense that everything always went wrong when he was nearby. Most of the time, things were fine, especially with normal day-to-day activities. This was an extremely specific level of bad luck that only came out almost every fucking time they entered a tomb.
If the man wasn’t raising the dead, or triggering a trap that had them falling face-first into a pit of shibei. Then it was rival tomb robbers, or some messed up ‘curse’ that just made them sick and sent them to the hospital for a week. Regardless, it was always something and it always involved Wu Xie. Because of this, Pangzi felt he was caught in some comedy of errors… and not his actual life.
This thought was only enforced by the current situation they had found themselves in earlier. No one would believe him if he even tried explaining the unthinkable level of fucked they had been in.
It had been meant as a day trip before heading home from a recent job. They had been roughly an hour outside of Dazhou, in the northeast corner of Sichuan province, when a local had commented on the gear in the back of their vehicle. When asked if he’d known of any tombs in the area, he’d seemed hesitant at first. But Wu Xie had his ways, usually involving sweet words and puppy eyes. It was always the eyes that persuaded them... Before long the story about a nearby tomb started falling from the stranger’s lips. He had told them it was twenty minutes away, and none of the locals would go close to the place.
Pangzi had brushed that off. Locals always seemed superstitious of tombs that hadn't been touched in generations. Usually due to stories passed down by their elders.
In addition, the man had told them why they were afraid of the place. Allegedly, it was cursed. Anyone who stepped near the site would find their life cut short soon after.
Pangzi rolled his eyes when the man wasn’t looking. There always seemed to be some kind of curse involved as well. Most of the time, he’d found the only curse was the locals vivid imaginations.
