Notes: First, thank you so much to Xantissa, for not only helping write this chapter but helping me figure out a better way to tell the story! This chapter was completed because of them! <3
Also, as always, thank you Merinnan for beta'ing the chapter for me!
I was having a hard to trying to figure out how to tell this story the way I wanted. Then Xan helped me realize there was a better way I could do it, so this is not the end of The Last Qilin. I am making this into a series, so I can better tell the story I want to tell. So, if you would like to continue reading The Last Qilin and have this story bookmarked, please bookmark the series so you can continue to receive alerts when I update!
Thank you so much, and I hope you enjoy it!
"Please, come inside."
Zhang Rishan followed Wu Xie up the stairs, removing his shoes. Xiaoge followed behind silently, leaning down to untie his combat boots as they entered the home. Zhang Rishan didn't know much about Wu Xie and had never considered how he might live. Yet, seeing the way his home was didn't surprise him. There was a long worn couch against the left wall, and to the right sat a matching pair of chairs. Between the two seating areas was a low table covered in papers and books.
The rest of the room was a clutter of tables and shelves holding anything from books and scrolls, to authentic antiques scattered across any available surface. That came as no surprise, seeing as the Wu were arguably the best tomb-raiding family in the Mystic Nine.
Wu Xie motioned to the two chairs off to the right, smiling as Xiaoge entered and joined them. He blushed slightly, noting the mess on the table, and made his way over to start cleaning away the items. "Would you like some tea?" he asked, clearly hoping that the offer would offset the state of his home at the moment.
In a rush to get to the point, Zhang Rishan was about to refuse the offer when Xiaoge walked past him, sat down, and nodded. Coughing lightly, Zhang Rishan sat as well. "Thank you, that would be nice."
"Wonderful!" Wu Xie glanced around for a moment, his arms full of the documents and resource material that had been on the table a moment earlier. Seeing a smaller table that was already overflowing with papers, he made his way over and set the items down. "I'll be right back."
Watching the young man disappear through a doorway, Zhang Rishan glanced over at his Patriarch. "He seems a bit," there was a pause as he looked around again, "disorganized, doesn't he?" If Zhang Qiling felt the same way, he didn't say. "Do you believe he is the help you need?" he asked a moment later, and to that, Xiaoge nodded.
Before he could ask another question, a flash of red caught his eye. From the side of the couch, the fox they had seen in the yard popped its head out. Its ears were folded back as a soft gekkering came from the animal, obviously annoyed by their presence. It was then that Zhang Rishan noticed that it wasn't so much his presence, as it was Xiaoge that the animal was looking towards.
Xiaoge didn't seem bothered by the fox's annoyance, watching it with dark, unreadable eyes.
