Writing the lore for my Homebrew D&D world and I think I’ve figured out what I want to do for the Raven Queen:
In the world of Esterra, the Raven Queen was once a mortal who then ascended to godhood, but few know how the story actually goes. Many of the gods fear or resent her, blaming her for killing the previous god of death to take his place. While she did usurp him, that’s not how she became a god.
Once a young mortal, she caught the eye of one of the less powerful nature goddesses. They were in love but couldn’t be together. When the goddess died, her final wish was to bestow all her power upon her love, which caused this mortal woman to ascend to godhood. Thus was the ascension of the god Kore.
It was only after some time as a god, seeing how the god of Death had betrayed his duties by becoming fearful of death itself and his own eventual demise, that Kore decided to do something. That is when she killed him and took his place as the God of Death that Esterra now knows.
