Reid on Dan and the CVS/CBS storyline and advancing his career

Interviewer: Flashing back to last season here of course, the CVS vs. CBS situation where Danny sleeps with Amy’s sister, did that spark the CBS storyline this year?

Reid: It actually did. And that was a very- that joke was pitched early on. Some people know, some people might not know. We actually have like a long rehearsal process where we get a lot of scripts or at least ideas in advance and we play around with them. And this doesn’t happen a lot on tv shows, you usually don’t get a lot of rehearsals, which I think is what makes Veep work the way that it does. And that was pitched I think before we even had our first table read. And, to be honest, I was sort of curious, I’m like how is that going to work? I mean to sort of see, like ‘cause Amy’s sister...And originally, it was that Dan was just going to sort of sleep with Amy’s sister because he liked how she treated him like shit and he really respected that she treated him like shit. And I was like, I think there needs to be something more. And so they came up with this really funny twist that he mishears her and thinks she works for CBS News, when really she works for CVS. And it just stuck, and the joke worked and we just kept on rolling into it. And I mean- it was just so funny to see how you can plant this tiny little seed of a joke and now it spawned this whole storyline for an entire season.

Interviewer: Dan sleeping with Amy’s sister, does Dan have any standards with women, is there any threshold he won’t hit? Like, how low will Dan go? 

Reid: Dan will go extremely low. I mean look, I think bottom line is, it needs to do something for him like career-wise, that’s usually the thing. You know, I wouldn’t- He’s not like a typical lothario, I don’t think he’s like just out there trying to sleep his way through town. He’s very calculated so I think it’s always sort of like, who can get me the next interview, who can get me the next job, who can get me like one step higher up on that ladder. So he’s just uh- man, he’s just a dick. He’s just a dick. He doesn’t call, he doesn’t write.

Interviewer: He doesn’t call, no.
