PAN : Act 1 has been revised
PAN is a sci-fi fantasy story about the spiritual journey of an alien pigeon, told from the perspective of a set of probes exploring their planet.
Originally written in 2019 as a sequel to an ARG that briefly peered into this universe, the story explores the goings on of an upper "Visible Existence Spectrum" of a gas giant within our solar system.
When humanity abandons an AI running a collection of bug-like drones on the planet, armed with a database of all human history, the AI is free to observe things that Earth had never focused on. There, they find a rich ecosystem made of a different form of life than what exists on Earth, and a society of intelligent dragons with the diversity and features of earthen birds. They call themselves the "Drek", their word for dirt, just as humans are named after our word for dirt.
One Drek, a pigeon named Vasan, is chosen by these probes to leave their aimless, lonely life behind for an adventure through the several floral layers of the planet's atmosphere. Their goal is simple yet absurd: fly to the leering, humming, roaring, shimmering moon that hovers above the planet, where the probes call home.
Neither the probes nor Vasan anticipate how the intricacy of this society would become their greatest obstacle.
The story exists on its own site, which has been re-formatted and updated to allow for easier reading on more devices.
