Chopin bean stack, bcs i had a dream yesterday where i own one of them hh Ok, but i rlly want to own these plushies now that i think about it.
Okay so I'm convinced Eternal Sonata has the most detailed and captivating maps and it was a PS3 game nonetheless. I wasn't able to fully enjoy it back in 2008, but now with a better tv (and with good earbuds!) I'm astounded.
(These screenshots are not my own, it's difficult to find good ones, and PSNow that I'm currently using to play does not allow screencapture...I'm actually upset about this.)
The extreme fantasy paired with painted-like background and photorealistic details like leaves and cobblestones are awe-inspiring. Even the sewer map was beautiful! It had sunlight filtered through moss and foilage that wound around purple glass baubles that hung above. Little lizards pandered about.
The houses' interiors show a life being lived, with adorable clutters and whimsical lights and decorations accompanied by an endless variety of plants. Each one made me want to pack up and live there.
Every single map I am breathtaken by the charm and romantic reverie. Even though I normally prefer a free camera in games, the angles that it moves as you walk along a path tells a story in itself - entering a shrouded forest panning upwards to look at the rays of light, or focusing on a quaint little waterfall area as you pass by. Each scene it's own soundscape of birds, rustling leaves and water babbling nearby. All the while being orchestrated by a fitting selection of Chopin's music.
Sadly, all of this makes the JRPG aspect of it painfully out of place. Nothing against JRPGs (I love some of them) but the clichés and the character modeling that are essentially cel-shaded and goofy I feel did not give this game justice and I think that's a big reason many couldn't get into it and the game fell into obscurity...
The entire premise is you're in a fever dream of Frédéric Chopin (the pianist) just before his death in the late 1800s. Many lines are pure poetry. The vingettes tell true pieces of his life and they are often grim, as Chopin was a sickly man who fleed his beloved homeland of Poland after the uprising. Him and his so-called masculine girlfriend (I'm convinced she was trans) that went by the pen name George Sand lived with him and took care of him until he was evicted from his home due to having Tuberculosis.
The wildly colorful and imaginative scenes should be the only thing to offset the serious nature of the premise, not the characters entrusted with carrying it.
I know this would never happen but I really wish Eternal Sonata could be redone with the same scenery just HD, but the characters being reworked to a more realistic and likeable version. With about 100% less of Prince whatever his name is talks-a-lot and 1000% more Viola and Arco.
Despite these flaws, it will remain one of my favorites. The combat was much more interesting and complex than I remember, a mix of realtime and turnbased with mechanics like different moves and forms depending on whether you were in the sunlight or darkness. Although suprisingly difficult (after playing for about 5 hours so far), after grinding a little and saving a million times in multiple save files I saw less game over screens, and winning a tough battle is very satisfying.
Seriously though, this game is the worst when it comes to ruining whole saves, because it'll thrust you into a boss battle with no option to exit the map to level up, and if you're not strong enough, well...that's it. You either fight it over and over with different strategies or you go back hours of gameplay to a previous savefile and prepare better before the point of no return...
I read a post on here that described it as "self-indulgent" and I honestly can't think of a more fitting word. All-in-all, if you can overlook the cringyness of the characters at times, the scenery is definitely worth it.
Allegretto - Eternal Sonata (Trusty Bell)
I forgot to post this on here back when I did it. Uploading now since I know there’s an active base of fans for Eternal Sonata.
