unfortunately i was a little disappointed!! :/
i’ll try to stay vague and without getting spoilery; the world building was gorgeous and the plot was interesting and had a LOT of potential, but the main character sucked. haha. which is doubly unfortunately, because i do like dane dehaan. but his character was a fuckboy to the Extreme, and not even one who was redeemed by the end (the narrative tried to, but to me it still felt empty and like he hadn’t learned a thing).
and like, this just could be a beef for me personally, but we learned nothing about the main characters, like no backstory or anything? but maybe i’m too used to all these superhero origin stories haha. but their relationship as partners was so disappointing to watch, especially since we have movies like wonder woman, mad max, and even the force awakens where rey is not highlighted as “LOOK SHE IS A GIRL!!! but we’d still better Protect her” at every opportunity.

The original comics are VERY famous in France, but like they're packed with so many things, plots, and concepts that I can't figure out how they managed to put everything in one movie. Also Laureline is supposed to be a protagonist next to Valerian so I'm a bit salty about her not being in the movie's title.

I haven't seen it and don't necessarily plan on it, but apparently the title of the original comics has BOTH of their names but they were like "well we can't sell this if there's a female lead" and that kind forms all of my expectations for me right there
ahhh i see. i knew it was based on comics, but i didn’t know Laureline was originally supposed to be in the title as well. yikes. i actually did like her character, but MAN was she held back by how the narrative (of the movie) treated her. it was honestly just another stale “man harasses woman until she gives in” type of thing. :/
as far as content itself though, you could definitely tell there were a million background concepts that obviously couldn’t all be fit into one movie, which is understandable given it’s based on comics, so i don’t really have too much beef with that aspect. the plot they did choose to go with was interesting and brought up a lot of grey morals that could’ve been nice and sticky to delve through, but in the end fell kind of flat thanks to Valerian’s character and also how they just kind of “ehhhh ok we solved it yay” at the end (i’m still trying to be vague to avoid being spoilery, so sorry if that doesn’t make much sense haha).
