The frozen yoghurt shop is unusually quiet today. It’s 1:32 pm and there’s only been 6 people in here. I check the containers, making sure the cubes of fruits are properly cooled. I wipe a few stray drops of yoghurt from the machine with a cloth and thoroughly rinse that too.
My co-worker, Kailo, looks up from her phone to ask me a question, “Hey, did you know that there’s a new flavour for toothpaste?”
I look at her, wildly amused. “No, I do not.”
Excitedly, she nudges up to my side and shoves her phone in my face.
“But please, enlighten me.” I deadpan, taking the phone from her. I can barely hide my disgust as I read the article. “Oh, that’s just very wrong.”
“Eh, I guess.” She shrugs one shoulder, back to scrolling through her daily newsfeed. That figures; Kailo is the kind of person that would come into work wearing the weirdest things and is still able to pull it off. She is very adventurous and likes trying new things. She told me she once tried kale ice cream and actually liked it.
The front doorbell tinkles, signalling a customer. Kailo takes her order, tapping at the computer screen. I grab a small cup and fill it with fresh frozen yoghurt, then with languid strokes, drizzle cookie sauce over the top and hand it to the customer with a napkin.
“Enjoy.” I offer a smile, handing her the yoghurt. The doorbell tinkles again and Moon Bin enters this time. He waves hi to both me and Kailo.
“Hey. Class finished?” I ask as he walks over to my side of the counter.
“Yeah,” He nods. He sighs. “I kind of need to talk to you about something.”
“Is everything okay?” I look at his expression. He briefly glances at Kailo.
“Not really.” He looks at the clock behind me. “Your shift ends at 2, right?” I nod.
“Then, I’ll just wait here for you.” He orders a medium sized yoghurt and takes his usual spot by the window at the very end of the room, like he always does when he comes here to wait for me. When I had just gotten this part time job, my manager, Sammy and Ji Ah, two other part time workers, and Kailo would always ask me if he was my boyfriend because sometimes if I worked the late night shift, he would swing by and wait for me until my shift ended. He would walk me back to campus then, making sure I safely gotten into my dorm.
They soon got used to me denying me and Moon Bin dating and stopped asking questions. Although Kailo occasionally comments on how she thinks he’s pretty hot. I teased her once about it, offering to help set her up with him and her exact answer was, “Honey, please, he’s not my type.”
I’m pretty sure she doesn’t mean it in a bad way. It’s just he’s really not her type. She usually dates really quickly and the longest I’ve ever her date was with a guy who had his own pet hedgehog. To think of it, I’m not even sure what her type is.
The two hours tick by, with a large group of sleep deprived students walking in and demanding we serve them coffee in between, until I pointed out that the cafe is next door. They eventually ordered frozen yoghurts, apparently too tired to even walk to next door. Sammy enters just in time, to take over my shift.
She clocks in on Moon Bin immediately and then gives me a knowing look.
“Honestly.” I shake my head. Sammy is the only who won’t stop pushing me and Moon Bin together. Sammy has classes with the both of us so she knows Moon Bin as well.
I clock out and grab my staff from the back. Moon Bin is already standing by the counter, waiting for me as I come out from the back. We go outside, the heat of the afternoon blasting from the ground.
“So, what’s wrong?” I ask, as we come to a bench under a shady tree. I’m still in my white cotton collar shirt which is the uniform and am sweating down my back. Moon Bin notices my discomfort.
“D'you want to go home and change first?” He asks.
“No, it’s fine, don’t worry.” I shake my head. “What’s up?”
“You know the show I have to do next Friday?” He says. I nod in response. “Yeah, that’s also the same day my parents are coming to see me.” He waits for the ball to drop.
“Oh. Oh.” I raise my eyebrows in realisation. Moon Bin’s dad doesn’t know that he is enrolled in the Performing Arts Major. His dad wasn’t really supportive of his choice but his mom covered for him and then told him to choose whatever he wanted. If they come this Friday…
“Yup.” He nods gloomily.
“Well, your performance is at night. Maybe they’ll have left by then?” I suggest.
“I…I want to tell him.” He exhales.
“What?”
“I don’t want to lie to him anymore.” He says, turning to me. “I keep having to think of answers to questions about aerospace.” He looks so positively terrified. In spite of myself, I give a small laugh.
“That’s what you told him you were studying?”
“I panicked.” He says defensively.
“Bin, I think that it’s great that you want to tell him the truth but are you sure?” I ask him.
He looks down at his fists. “Yeah. I’m sure.”
“Well, okay then,” I bump my fist at his arm. “I have your back. If there’s anything you need me to do, just tell me.” I smile at him.
We move on from this subject and talk about how rehearsals are going. He digs out the tickets from his pocket and hands them to me, one for me, the other for Sammy, my roommate and Jin Woo’s girlfriend.
“Don’t lose them. You know what, just ask Sammy to take them.” Moon Bin has zero trust in me.
I roll my eyes. “Just because that one time I lost the train tickets–”
“And we had to run all the way back because you’d lost yours and everyone had to re-buy their tickets for the later train.” He reminds me darkly.
Ignoring his words, I tell him that I’ll keep them safe no matter what. It’s his first performance with his parents there, I’m definitely not missing this for anything in the world.

“That will be all today. Thank you class.” Our lecturer switches off her slide and packs her laptop up all in one swift movement. Everyone else is either leaving the class or talking to their friends. I check my phone, slightly frowning. Why isn’t he replying?
I flop my bag on the desk, putting my notebook and textbook inside. I check my phone one last time before shoving it in my jacket pocket. As I walk along the hall, passing some students taping a poster on the wall, I spot Rocky and Jin Woo among the crowd.
“Hey, guys,” I catch up to them. They turn, surprised.
“Hey,” They both say, smiling.
They should know where Moon Bin is. “Do you know where Bin is?” I ask. “He didn’t come to class today. And I can’t get hold of him either.”
Rocky glances at Jin Woo before answering. “Oh, he’s probably practising again.”
“Um, see the thing is,” Jin Woo sighs. “He hasn’t stopped since 3 in the morning.”
“What?” My tone is sharp and the two guys in front of me visibly straightens up. “He hasn’t slept?”
Rocky winces. “We rehearsed last night and finished at 10. We went back to the dorm at 10:30–”
“He went out at 3 in the morning to practise by himself again.” Jin Woo explains.
“So, technically, he did sleep for about 4 hours–” Rocky stops when Jin Woo nudges him. I sigh.
“It’s his dad, isn’t it?” I look at them. They both nod slowly.
“He was really stressed out before and now he’s even more stressed than ever.” Rocky says.
“Maybe you should go talk to him. At least get him to stop for a few hours to get some rest.”
They tell me which of the building to go to and what practice room he is in. Two girls and a guy look at me suspiciously as I walk down the corridor blindly before finally giving up and asking them for directions. Standing outside the door, I can hear the thump of the music and someone’s feet moving rapidly. They don’t stop even when I knock on the door.
Moon Bin finally looks up as I enter the room. “Ae Ra.” He stops dancing. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to check up on you.” I say. I watch as he turns off the speaker and plops down on the floor, exhausted. I grab his towel from a chair nearby and toss it at him, landing on his head.
“Bin–” I start, sitting down in front of him. He wipes at his face, refusing to look at me.
“I know, you want me to get some rest. But the show is two days away. I can’t afford to waste any time.” He finally says, lowering his head while fidgeting with the corner of the towel.
“You’re exhausted, Bin.” I say. “Did you even eat breakfast?”
When he looks back at me, his eyes wet around the rim. “I’m just so scared.” He says. “I mean, it’s my dad. He’s never approved of my interest in performing on stage, says it’s a waste of money.
How am I going to impress him, Aera?” His voice cracks slightly. I scoot closer to him to hug him. He leans his head on my shoulder, taking a deep breath.
“You don’t have to impress him, you know?” I say softly. “Just show him what you can do. You may disagree on somethings but in the end you’re his son, he’ll love you no matter what.” I pat his hair, slick with sweat, wince a little and try to discreetly wipe it on my pants. He gives a soft chuckle.
“I can see you through the mirror.”
“You’re disgusting. Please go take a shower.” I deadpan. He laughs as we pull apart.
“Thank you. You seem to always find the right things to say.”
“What? Like asking you to take a shower?” I joke.
He chuckles and absentmindedly pecks the top of my forehead. I stare at him, startled by this out of the blue yet affectionate action. His eyes shift; contemplating something. He slowly leans in and to my surprise, I do too.
“HEY BIN–” Our lips barely touch when Rocky bursts through the door. We pull away with the urgency of a dog chasing after a cat. Rocky stares at us, speechless.
I stand up abruptly. “I have-have a, um, shift.” I say to no one in particular. “So I, yeah, um, okay, byeeee.” Shit, I sound like Jake Peralta. But there’s no time to dwell on that as I leave the room at top speed. I’m so concentrated on leaving that I almost knock down Sammy by the stairs.
“Woah, hey,” She says. “Have you seen Jin Woo?”
“Uh, um,” I clear my head, trying to think of an answer. “No.”
“Oh-kay,” She frowns. “Are you alright?”
“Me? Yeah, yeah, totally fine.” I swallow. “Listen, I gotta go. I have….a class.”
I scurry down the stairs and out of the building. I walk and walk with no actual sense of direction. Walking keeps me occupied. If I stop, I keep thinking of…that. Eventually, my legs tire out and I plop down on a bench. How did that happen? My face heats up even at just the thought of it and despite myself, I feel a bit giggly on the inside. He’s my friend! I shouldn’t be having thoughts like this.
We barely talk on the phone, our usual routine, for the next few days until the show. I’d like to say it’s mainly because he’s busy practising and I’m busy with my shifts and assignments. We do text back and forth, but avoid talking about what happened. Texting is easier, because we don’t sound awkward at all. We still sound the same, playful banter, some nagging.
“Lighten up.” Kailo hisses at me. I’m slumped behind the counter, playing with a plastic spoon. The doorbell rings and a couple of people walk in chattering. I get up from my seat and grab a cone to fill. I drizzle cranberry sauce on it and wrap a napkin around half the cone before handing it to the customer.
After giving the customer her change, Kailo turns to survey me. “What’s up with you?”
“Nothing. Assignments,” I reply automatically, back in my slump seat.
“Something happened with Moon Bin?”
I sit up, alert and suspicious. “How did you know?”
She puts up both of her hands, her eyes wide. “I didn’t. I guessed.” She says.
“Oh.” I mumble.
She looks at me. “Whatever it is, it’ll eventually work its way out.”
I wince. “I’m not so sure about this.” She moves her attention away from me when the doorbell tinkles. She urgently nudges my arm and I’m about to give her an annoyed look when I see the people standing in front of me: Moon Bin and his parents.
I scramble up, face red and unable to look at anything except for the countertop. I can feel Moon Bin’s eyes on me but I resolutely stare at the cup and cone model that shows our customers what the different cup sizes look like. I start making their orders, three cones. As I hand it over to them, I smile politely at his parents; over the five years I’ve known him, I’ve seen his mother more than his father. I surreptitiously glance at his dad’s expression, which is hard and realise he must have told him already.
As they leave to take a seat, I grab my phone. There are 5 unread messages all from him.
‘I’m having lunch with them now.’
‘Probably going to tell him now.’
‘Going to find somewhere to talk.’
'Headed to the yoghurt shop.’
'You busy?’
These were all sent before they came here.
I look at them talking by the window. It seems like Moon Bin has got everything under control, although his father doesn’t look too happy. I look worriedly in the direction of the washroom; Kailo’s been in there for a long time. As they get up to leave, I shoot a questioning glance at Moon Bin, who nods slightly at me.
I don’t really understand but it must mean that his dad is willing to give him a chance. Kailo emerges from the washroom looking pale with one hand clutching her stomach.
“Kailo! Are you okay?”
“Ohhh, I think something went wrong with my lunch.” She sits down heavily. Her expression is pained as she drinks from her water bottle.
“What did you have?” I ask.
“Sushi.” She pauses as her stomach makes a weird sound. I offer to go the pharmacy to buy some medicine but she shakes her head, saying it’s all out of her system. That doesn’t seem to be the case even after two hours, I’ve been manning the cash register and making the orders for the customers while she sits weakly behind the counter, out of sight from customers.
“Kailo, I think you need to go to a clinic.” I frown, getting her a cup of warm water. Her hair plastered to her forehead from all the cold sweat.
“But, you have to leave soon and if I do too, no one is going to be here.”
I check the time. The show starts at 7. If Ji Ah makes it here by 8, I can still make it. “I can stay until Ji Ah comes. Just go to the clinic Kailo.”
She doesn’t even bothering protesting anymore. Before leaving, she gives me an apologetic hug. I tell her to tell me when she’s at the doctors to be safe. I look at the clock. I won’t have time to go home and change now. Business is slow between dinner hours so there’s really nothing much I can do, except pray that Ji Ah arrives here as soon as possible.
8:11 p.m. I am about to scratch the walls with frustration. Where is Ji Ah? I text Sammy to check if Moon Bin, Jin Woo and Rocky has performed yet.
'Almost. Where R U???’
I sigh and shoot off a quick reply. Ji Ah rushes through the door, out of breath. “Sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry.”
“Okay, I’ve got to go, bye!” I’ve been ready ever since 7:45 so I just grab my bag and hurry out the door. Sammy comes out to meet me when I arrive at the auditorium. She grabs my hand, pulling me inside. We pass rows and rows of seats in the darkness. I glance briefly at the stage just as the three of them emerge on stage. The music starts as I take my seat, trying to catch my breath. Moon Bin’s eyes flicker towards the crowd and then spots me. He gives the smallest smile and then resumes his performance.
The three of them work in perfect harmony, moving to each beat. I look around and see his parents a few rows over. His mother looks positively proud while his dad leans back against his seat, an unreadable expression on his face. The audience gives a loud cheer when Rocky does a spin mid-air, earning a bashful smile from him.
The performance ends with the crowd hyped up. After two vocal performances and a small skit, the show ends. There’s the sound of people talking and feet shuffling as they get ready to leave. Sammy and I make our way out and manage to find our way to backstage. We find the guys, with three of their other friends, Sanha, Eun Woo and MJ already with them.
“You guys were awesome!” I say, while Sammy gives them the thumbs up.
“I honestly thought I was going to trip and fall at one point.” Rocky says.
“That’s because you almost stepped on my foot.” Jin Woo shakes his head. As they bicker on, Moon Bin’s focus shifts to behind us; his parents. He excuses himself to walk over to them. We move farther away so as to give me some privacy in all the hubbub at backstage. MJ starts showing them the video he took of them on stage.
“That’s so unflattering.” Sanha comments. He whips out his phone. “You should look at the one I took.” They argue who recorded the best video with Jin Jin exasperatedly chiming in to say at one point, “None of you are Steven Spielberg. None.” and Rocky saying, “You should’ve taken it from my left.”
I look away from their tirade as Moon Bin hugs both of his parents, who leaves and walks toward us, a look of relief on his face. “Everything okay?” I ask, as he nears. Everyone turns their attention to him.
“Yeah,” He exhales a little shakily. He gives a smile. “He doesn’t get the dancing.” We pause, unsure how to response.
“And you’re smiling because…?” Eun Woo asks.
“Because he said I could continue my major, even though he didn’t understand it.” He gives a small laugh. “He’s letting me stay on!” We cheer, hugging him all at once, ignorant to the other looks in the room.
My phone vibrates a message from Kailo who tells me she’s at home now. I see another one from her when she was at the doctors. I tell them I’m going out to make a call where it’s quieter so I can actually hear what someone is saying.
“Hey, are you feeling better?” I ask. “What did the doctor say?”
“I’m feeling sooo much better now.” Kailo’s voice, although not yet back to her normal tone was sounding much more alert than a few hours ago. “It turns I have a very weak intestine and I’m technically not allowed to eat anymore raw fish.”
“I told you, 'Fish are friends not food’.” I quote 'Finding Nemo’ to her.
“That’s just because you don’t eat raw fish.” She says. “Say that again when you’re eating battered cod with chips. Maybe then I’ll believe you.”
She yawns and I tell her to go to bed. She says she will but not before watching an episode of Kim’s Convenience. I hang up, turning to go back inside when I see Moon Bin waiting for me.
“Where are the others?” I walk up to him.
“They went to celebrate. I told them to go ahead first.” Moon Bin says.
“Oh.” Awkward silence. Not wanting to feel weird around him, I hold up my phone.
“I just got off the phone with Kailo. She was feeling unwell just now. Ate some sushi. She had to go to the doctors and there was not anyone to stay at the shop. That was why I was late to the show.”
He lets out a breath that I didn’t know he was holding. “Oh. That’s why.” He scratches his neck. “I thought you weren’t going to come.”
“Why would you think–” I pause as realisation hits me. “Oh.”
“Is she feeling better?” I look up at him, confused, then realise he means Kailo.
“Yeah. She’s okay now.” I nod. There’s another pause where neither of us says anything, then as if he can’t stand it, he says, “Should we talk about what happened the other day?”
I bite the inside of my cheek. “Yeah, I think we should.”
We walk around, finding some place to sit, heading towards the campus park. Not for the first time ever, I marvel at the size of this entire university. It’s like a small village could literally just live here. We walk along the path, lined with small grey pebbles and small lights installed on the ground, so that it looks like one of those airplane runways.
“So, I guess I should apologise first.” Moon Bin says, as we take a seat on one of the park benches.
I open my mouth to protest but he stops me. “Just–let me finish.
What happened the other day. I shouldn’t have done it. I was feeling helpless and you were there as a friend and I shouldn’t have kissed you,” He continues. “That wasn’t how I…” He trails off.
“You what?” I ask, catching his hesitation.
“It wasn’t how I…,” He scratches his neck again, an action he does when he’s embarrassed. “…imagined I would kiss you. Not in that situation.”
I stare at him dumbly, too stunned to speak. There’s so many parts to his explanation that needs more explaining.
“I-I….” I swallow. “Um, okay.”
He lets me take my time, albeit the concerned look on his face is kind of endearing. “Moon Bin, what do you mean it was how you imagined?”
“Oh. That.” He says, as if he hadn’t thought of explaining that part to me. “Um, see, I kind of, really like you.” He fixes his eyes on mine. I think I can fully comprehend what the phrase 'heart beating against ribcage like a freaking earthquake’.
“Well,” I find my voice again. “In what situation would you have wanted to…kiss me?”
He gives the cutest/ most bashful smile ever and leans in to peck me on my lips. “Something like this?”
In spite of myself, I smile, feeling giddy. “Could you do that again?”
He smiles, leaning in again but this time I do too. This kiss lasts longer than the former and when it ends, he gently kisses my forehead. “Thank you.” He chuckles softly that my heart does a small skip.
“For what?” I laugh, even if it isn’t that funny.
“Just.” He shrugs. “Thank you.”
“You know, if you’re trying to be all mysterious and romantic like in dramas and stuff, it really isn’t going to work on me, because I won’t understand a thing you’re doing.” I joke, smiling.
You just never know when you’re going to open your eyes and fall for someone who’s been by your side this entire time.
BONUS :
“DID YOU GUYS MAKE A BET ON US GETTING TOGETHER?!”
synopsis : who could’ve imagined a day out with your on-campus enemy would’ve turned out like this.
It was obvious to anyone at the university that the both of us were enemies. We were constantly butting heads at discussions, where he would disagree with everything I say. I mean, seriously, I don’t know what this guy’s problem is. From day one, it’s like he took one look at me and decided he didn’t like me and wanted me gone. Well fine by me, I don’t really like him either.
“I see you’re working on the university’s column. Need any help?”
I glare at the person speaking. Speak of the devil, Kihyun stands there, leaning both his palms of either side of my desk opposite me. He raises the side of his lips in a mock smile. His voice drips with sarcasm.
“Why, so you can ruin it?” I shoot back, my eyes back to the laptop screen.
“I wouldn’t exactly ruin it. I mean, by my standards your article could be the university’s biggest-“
“Shit.” I glance up and see his face twisted in annoyance. “I mean, oops, typing error.” I smile sweetly at him. Two can play this game. He rolls his eyes and leaves the room while I glare at his retreating back.
That man infuriates me.
“Photography majors, to the left. Journalism majors to the right, please.” The lecturer, a woman in her late forties ushers us all into our respective sides. I see Kihyun standing opposite me and roll my eyes when we meet. It’s bad enough I have to see him in the Editorial Room every week ( I effectively avoid running into him on campus and vice versa). But this, this is a very practical joke that someone up there is having fun playing: we both have a class together. Worse, as the lecturer drones on and on about the balance between a mind blowing photograph and a soul inspiring article, I quickly realize what this week’s assignment would be.
“—You will work together in pairs. However,” She pauses, looking mystified. “You will not be picking your partners. Professor Lim and I, have chosen your partners, according to each person’s strength. Please check your names on the screen above.”
Nerves fill me as I look at the image projected on the wall.
“Ong, Sierra-“ I spot my name in the middle and my gaze travels to the left. “-Yoo, Kihyun.”
Damn. Just as I register this new information, Kihyun and I turn towards each other in obvious dismay simultaneously.
NONONONONO. There’s got to be a mistake.
My ears perk up as my lecturer continues to speak. “There will be a group with three people, as there are 21 students in my class. That group is-“ My heart lifts. “Mary Li and John Wallace.” And plummets into the pit of my stomach. She ushers us to find and identify our partners.
I give a sigh and reluctantly move to the same row as Kihyun, taking a seat two spaces away from him. As I stare resolutely in front of me, I see him roll his eyes and move a seat closer to me.
This is going to be hard.
“So what do you think of this?” I ask, spreading my hands out in front of me, showing him the gorgeous view of Santa Monica Pier. The day dawned sunny and bright, with a cool breeze. The perfect weather for our assignment.
“What’s the theme?” He asks, squinting his eyes, and checking his camera. I ignore the irritation in his voice and decide to proceed cheerfully. Well, as cheerfully as I can without strangling the guy.
“Youth.” I close my eyes and feel the sun on me. “Youth, is a word with a wide definition, but according to a survey, most of our kind today like to head to the beach. Whether it’s to relax, to meet friends, to surf, to swim or even to just take Instagram worthy pictures.” I lean my palms on the sidewalk railing and look at the people down at the front of the beach.
“That’s it?” He raises his eyebrows.
I cross my arms. “You told me to pick a theme. I did. What’s wrong with it?”
“It’s cliché.” He deadpans.
“Well, then let’s make sure it won’t be.” I smile before turning away from him and running down the steps to the beach. Halfway down the steps, I turn around to yell at him, ”Are you coming or what?”
He puts down his camera, stares at me for a second so long that I think he hasn’t heard me. Then at last, he moves his feet and starts down the steps. As I take off my shoes to walk barefoot, I spot a woman holding her toddler, walking towards the edge of the water. The toddler squeals in delight as the water hits her toes.
Perfect. I smile.
“Kihyun!” I turn around to call him and almost topple over from the rush. Kihyun reaches forwards and grabs hold of my elbow firmly. I stand and clear my throat, embarrassed.
“Um, thanks.” He nods, unexpectedly humbly. I point to the woman and the toddler. “I think that’d be perfect for our first shot.” As we both head toward them, my face feels unreasonably hot as I’ve only been here for half an hour. I can’t already be sunburned can I?
Huh. Weird.
We move from the south side of the beach to the east, taking pictures of kids running around, couples hanging out, pet dogs splashing around excitedly in the water. I take notes of their expressions, occasionally asking a few why they were here, if they’re here regularly. Around noon, Kihyun suggests that we take a break and I’m too hot and thirsty to argue with him. We head to a shack on the sidewalk, walking in our bare feet, our shoes in our hands.
“Can you believe these people come here almost everyday?” I take a sip of the drink that he got for me from the shack stand. “This is amazing!” I’m so excited that I must be blabbering in front of him.
Kihyun’s been focused on looking through the pictures he took on his camera while I’ve been talking. But now he looks up from it and fixes me with a curious look.
“It’s just the beach. Why are you so excited?” He asks, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. His dark hair flops lazily across his forehead, giving him a very relaxed look. It’s the first time, I realise as I look at him, that he’s not gelled his hair up.
“I’ve always loved the beach when I was little. Going to the beach to me, it meant, spending time with my family, having fun, relaxing. It’s also where my grandpa brought me to play a lot when I was a kid. It was his favourite place. He met my grandma at a beach.” Talking about my family brings on a wave of nostalgia and my nose tingles with a sensation. I turn back to see him looking at me with a long look.
“You’re…full of surprises.” He says.
“What?” I wonder if I’ve misheard him.
“I said, you’re weird.” He says firmly. But I’m sure I heard him say something different. I frown. He turns back to his camera.
“Hey, can I see the pictures?” I ask, holding out my hand for his camera. He clearly hesitates and I raise my eyebrows questioningly, preparing myself for his bratty reply.
“Here.” Surprisingly, he wraps the camera strap around my wrist and puts the camera in my hands. He shows me which button to press to move from picture to picture. I scroll through the pictures, stopping at one then moving along to the next. The photographs are scenic, and beautiful, capturing each individual’s expression, even in motion.
“These are really good.”
He smirks, taking the camera from me. “That may be the first compliment you’ve ever given me.”
I roll my eyes. “I may hate you but I’ve got to admit, you’ve got skills.”
It hits me that half the day has passed and I haven’t been irritated or annoyed or close to wanting to hit him all day. Well, that’s a first.
“Hey,” I point to the further side of the beach. “Do you think-“
“Sierra.” A voice to my side calls, and it’s not Kihyun’s. I know exactly whose voice this is. My throat suddenly goes dry as I turn to face my ex-boyfriend. A girl stands at his side, eyeing me sharply and with the friendliness of a snake.
He smiles. “I thought it was you!”
I don’t smile and keep silent. Kihyun looks at me in confusion.
“How’ve you been?” He spots Kihyun. “Heyy, are you her new boyfriend?”
“Mike. Just stop it.” I say, unable to keep the irritation out of my voice.
“This is Lavia.” He introduces his girlfriend. Me and the girl exchange cursory glances. Kihyun senses the hostile mood.
“Whoever you are, it was nice meeting you.” He glances at me. “But we have to leave now.” He grabs my wrist decisively and starts walking towards the opposite direction. I would’ve objected to this action in the past, but it’s like my joy of being at the beach has been dampened by the sudden appearance of my ex. I follow him in silence, never once looking back.
As we reach a part of the beach which is quite secluded, he suddenly becomes conscious of holding my hand and lets go. I reach up and pretend to brush my hair behind my ears. For a second I think he wants to ask me about what that whole thing was but suddenly thinks better of it and clears his throat, jolting me out of my thoughts.
“Let’s continue, if you’re okay.” He says, seemingly ignoring what just happened. I don’t want to talk about it either so I decide to play along, nodding to his suggestion. He looks at me for a moment and…is that concern I see in his face?
I must be having a really weird day, what with running into my ex.
It’s around dusk when we decide we’re done for the day. We sit on the beach side by side, looking at the setting sun glinting across the sea. Seagulls squawk as they fly across the golden sky. This morning, I would’ve protested to the idea of sitting here and looking at the sunset with Kihyun. I mean, this Kihyun, someone I’ve hated from the start of school.
It’s like, I’ve actually spent a day with him and I realized although somewhat reluctantly that he’s not a bad person to be around.
“He was my ex-boyfriend.” I say, looking into the distance. He turns to me in surprise.
I hug my knees and continue, now that I’ve started. “We dated for a year. That’s the longest I’ve ever dated someone. Only, I found out that he was cheating on me with another girl for 6 months, and when I confronted him, he claimed we were never official.”
There’s an uncertain pause. “He’s an ass.”
“Thanks. I think he knows it but doesn’t care.” I manage a small albeit sad smile.
“I can’t believe you just froze on the spot.” He says teasingly. “I thought you were so good with comebacks.”
But I don’t rise to the bait. “Hmm.” I circle the sand with my fingers. “Couldn’t think of any.”
He turns, surprised that I didn’t rebut him. “Do you…do you still like him or something?” He asks, gingerly. I look at him, wondering if he’s winding me up but he stares to the front, face serious.
“No.” I let out a breath. “Of course not. It’s just sometimes I can’t believe I was so stupid. I wasted a year of my life with him.” I shake my head, smiling.
“I can’t believe I’m telling you all of this.”
“Who better to tell than your enemy?” He checks his watch.
I consider this. “I don’t see you as my enemy.” I say slowly. He raises his eyebrows. I hold my forefinger up to stop him from saying anything. “But, I don’t know, maybe we started on the wrong foot. You were always very sarcastic towards me, constantly disagreeing with me. I couldn’t help but act the same way towards you.”
He seems to digest this for a moment, tossing a shell across the sand.
“Huh. I didn’t know that was how I acted towards you.”
“You always seemed a bit uptight.” I point to his hair. “Like your hair. It’s almost always gelled up; you should let it down every once in a while. It’d be an improvement.”
He scoffs at my words as I shrug my shoulders. He reaches into his bag, pulling out a box of sparklers. I watch as he lights a couple and hands them to me.
“Hold this.” I take it from him obligingly, wondering what he has up his sleeve. He holds his camera up and instructs me to hold the sparklers properly. He zooms in the lens and I hear the sound of the camera clicking.
Without any warning, he tilts the camera towards me and takes a picture. I almost drop the sparklers.
“Hey!” I say indignantly. Smiling, he shows me how the pictures turn out. In the soft evening hue, he’s adjusted the lighting and aperture accordingly to the atmosphere and has somehow captured my face in a smile, my gaze on the sparklers.
“That’s really good.” I say eventually. The look on his face says he knows it. I roll my eyes at his cockiness and shake my head. The sparklers have gone out now and I drop them in a plastic bag that was carrying the box of sparklers. I stand up and walk towards the water, stopping at just the teeth of it.
The gentle waves brush against my toes and I take a step forward. The water rushes up to my ankles; but I’m wearing shorts so it doesn’t really matter. I sink my feet deep into the damp sand but do not see another wave run towards me. The wave hits me unexpectedly and I lose my balance, almost falling. A strong hand comes from behind me and holds me steady.
“You’ve got to stop doing that.” Kihyun grins softly, looking down at me. I swallow, suddenly nervous. The space between us is little and I’m convinced my heart rate is not normal right this moment. For a second, I just stare at him, his hands are holding my wrists.
“I saw you.” He says haltingly, breaking the silence. I furrow my brows. “I saw you crying in the Photocopy Room that night.” He looks slightly embarrassed but not as embarrassed as I am because I’m now remembering what he’s talking about. He must know then, when my ex appeared, who he was. Did he pretend for my sake?
My mouth is dry with no words.
“I’ve never seen you shed a tear before then. But then of course I hadn’t, if according to you that was how I acted towards you. I had certainly seen many of your other emotions, anger, annoyance, joy even. But not sadness. It was confusing.” He says.
“It made me feel bad for you. I wanted to comfort you but wasn’t sure if I could.”
If he had then, would I have let him?
“I realised something that day,” He pauses. “I realised I wanted to care for you, to talk to you without arguing for once, to go places with you. I realised I have feelings for you.”
And, that is when I realised, my day was far from over.
[A/N] I honestly was just writing this with no plot whatsoever and hoped it would turn out good. Yes, it’s another Kihyun fic because I honestly don’t know why all my fics are inspired by him ( -maybe cuz he’s my bias- ) and I’m sorry to those who were hoping for a fic with other idols;; hope you guys like this one anyway. There will only be two parts to this fic. Tell me what you think of it! I’d love to hear feedbacks from you guys! Thanks for reading!
Synopsis: two old friends reunite unexpectedly and some things are said.
The atmosphere is romantic and very bohemian. The garden and the labyrinth are decorated with gorgeous buntings and the trees and hedges are strung with fairy lights that flicker in tempo. A band is playing some old tunes appropriate with the theme of the bash under the marquee. People are milling about in their costumes, glasses of champagne and sangrias in their hands and talking to each other. Some dance with their partners to the music, swaying side to side in rhythm.
Everything is perfect.
I adjust my Maleficent dress that reaches to my ankles. This costume was a gem, found at a thrift store last minute. It was originally a plain, puce coloured dress with a billowy skirt. The dark colours swirl at the end of the skirt and fade into a lighter colour, like a radient palette. It was slightly wide at the chest and small at the waist but my good friend, Catalina managed to help alter the dress, turning it into a gorgeous dress, complete with a copper twisted crown with two pointy bits as the horns. She’s also managed to create an exquisite Venetian styled mask from some silk and stiffened linen, which I now have over half of my face.
She’s dancing with her date, Liam on the dance floor when she spins around and spots me standing at the sidelines, waving at me to join her. I shake my head, comfortable with where I am.
Dancing has never been my strong point. Sure I like to bust a move every once in a while, but those usually happen in my living room. I move towards the refreshments for another refill of blood orange sangria.
As I walk up to the table, a guy half drunkenly pushes me to the right, mumbling some unintelligible slurs. I’m forcefully knocked into another person, causing his drink to spill out onto the table.
“I’m so sorry!” I gasp, as the red drink soaks the hem of his sleeve. I look up and find myself staring into the eyes of Kihyun, my friend. Whom I have not talked in many years. I swallow. Does he recognise me?
He shakes his head, instead offering me a concerned look. “Are you okay? That was a pretty rough shove.”
“I…Yes. I’m fine.” I lower my face. I don’t want him to recognise me. If it were anyone else, I would offer to have his shirt cleaned on my expense. But I would rather keep my conversation with him quick and short.
“Sorry about…that.” I point to his sleeve. He follows my finger and smiles to reassure me.
“It’s fine.” He furrows his brow with thought. “Don’t worry about it.” I smile awkwardly and turn my back to him, towards the jug of sangria. I’m just raising the jug over my glass when he leans in close to whisper in my ear,“The peach is better.” I jump and almost topple the jug over. I cast a startled look at him.
He pulls back, smiling. Was that payback? I don’t know what to think. It’s like I can’t properly function with him standing so close.
“What?” I finally manage, immediately forget my will to keep our conversation short. He nods towards the pinkish coloured drink.
“That tastes better, I promise.” He says. I’m not sure whether he’s being sarcastic or not so I hesitate in my movements. He raises his eyebrows encouragingly and all I can think is, he used to do that a lot too. I feel a pang of sadness; I’ve missed him. I pour the drink and put the rim to my lips, letting the sweet fruity drink trickle down my suddenly parched throat. When I’ve finished, I turn around to see him still looking at me. Does he recognise me?
I avert my eyes and look to the dance floor, pretending to be interested in whatever they’re doing on stage.
“Alright, everyone! This song is gonna be a slow one, so grab a partner and hit the dance floor!” The lead singer of the band shouts into the mic, as if we are all deaf. I’m still recovering from his very loud invitation when Kihyun holds out his hand for me. I stare at him, flustered.
“Let’s dance.” He says this in a matter of fact manner, and proceeds to take my hand in his when I don’t respond. I don’t have time to protest as he drags me to the dance floor. He turns and faces me, placing a polite hand on my waist but not before asking me if it’s okay. I rest my hand on his shoulder, the rest of my arm is rigid with nervousness. The possibility of me stepping on him is high, and I don’t think he realises that.
Suddenly, Catalina who’s dressed in the most gorgeous gossamer fabric gown as the Tooth Fairy with a custom made hairband, which has tiny teeth piled on it (Hmm. Might be best if you didn’t look at it too closely.) passes by me with widened eyes, still dancing. I try to convey to her that I didn’t know he would be here but she’s already turned away to the other side. No doubt she’ll be bombarding me with questions later on. For now, I need to concentrate on not stepping on his feet.
“Sierra-” He suddenly says my name. I jump, looking up at him and ah yes, the irony, step on his left foot. He winces and letting go of my hand for a second.
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to,” I stutter. “Is your feet okay? Should I get ice?”
He chuckles, shaking his head.
“It’s okay.” He takes my hand in his again. “Still the same as always, you are.”
My initial guilt fades as I register his words. He recognises me! In my heart, I feel a tad bit glad about this but also annoyed that I hadn’t been able to avoid him.
“You knew it was me!” I say, somewhat accusingly.
“It wasn’t hard to recognise you.” He pauses. “You always stood out in a crowd.”
He says this with a softness as he looks at me.
“I thought you wouldn’t remember-” I mumble.
“You?” He laughs. Leans in, and looks straight into my eyes, whispering softly. “I could never forget you.”

I choose a seat by the windows in the library, where there is sunlight streaming through the windows. I sit down and am fully prepared to experience a moment like the ones I've always seen in dramas where the sunshine gently surrounds the female lead and making her look angelic.
What I do not expect as I sit down is this: full blown sunshine coming right at me like I'm in the frickin sunflower. I squint my eyes abruptly as I look upwards, trying to find the strings to pull up the window blinds. A hand reaches from behind me and tugs on the strings. The blinds fall down with a rattling noise and the room suddenly dims a little. I blink to adjust my eyes to the room.
I turn face to face with Kihyun, staring at me amusedly.
“Hey, I thought you had to work this afternoon.” I say in surprise.
“Nah, Shownu said I could take the afternoon of.” He asks, taking a seat across the desk.
“Oh.” I nod. “And you came here because…?”
He leans forward, a glint in his eye. “You know that date I’ve been trying to set up for you? His name is Wonho and he’s a year older than you-Wait, you’ve heard of him right? He’s the guy who dumped milkshake over my-”
“Yes, I know who he is, he’s your friend,” I sigh. “Kihyun, I specifically told you I do not want to go on a blind date.”
“Come on, you’ll only have to have dinner with him next Friday and if you don’t like him, you’d never have to see him again.” He says.
I roll my eyes. “1 hour. That’s it.”
“Great! And maybe Hye Ji and I will go with you guys. Like a double date.” He adds as an afterthought.
“Who’s Hye Ji?” I narrow my eyes.
He smiles abashedly and rubs the back of his neck. “This girl I had a date with last week.”
“Oh.” I involuntarily frown and quickly shake it off, hoping he didn’t see that. “Great.”
Unfortunately, he has a keen eye and catches my expression. “What’s that face supposed to mean?”
“Nothing.” I look away guiltily.
“Hey, c’mon, tell me.” He says, tilting his face so he can meet my eyes.
“No, it’s nothing, really.” I shake my head. I give him a reassuring smile. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some assignments to catch up on.” I gesture to pile of papers in front of me. He eyes me suspiciously for a while but takes the hint and nods.
“See you later.” He says, smiling and ruffling my hair like he always does.
“See you.” I wait until he’s out of sight then collapse on the desk with a sigh.
Currently into day 154 of having a crush on best friend: Not doing so great.
“I honestly think you’re doing this just to torture yourself.” My housemate, Mina says from where she’s lying down on the couch in the living room in front of the TV. I bury my head into the cushion pillows with a groan.
“Shut up. I’m already kicking myself for agreeing to this.” I say into the pillow. “I don’t need you rubbing it in my face.”
“See, it’s actually really simple. You just tell him how you feel.” She shrugs.
“Not everyone has straightforward relationships like you and Leo okay?” I turn on my head so the side of my face is resting on the pillow and looking at her. “Do you have any idea what a mess I would be if I told him I like him?”
“Let me guess: You’ll lose him as a friend.” She holds up a finger as I open my mouth to object. “Or, you’ll remain friends but it’ll get so awkward between you guys that you guys gradually grow apart and can’t even be in the same room with each other.”
She looks at me with a triumphant expression. I look at her sheepishly. “How many times have I told you that?”
“Approximately 122 times, but who’s counting?” She gets off the couch and heads to the bathroom. I glance at the clock. 6:32 pm. I’ve got to get ready.
I take a shower, put on ripped jeans and a nice neutral coloured shirt and a jacket. I stand in front of the mirror, adding the only makeup I know, which is eyeliner and coloured lip balm. Trust me, this is me making an effort. I comb my hair, making sure my bangs aren’t all over the place.
“Wow. Coloured lip balm.” Mina says, pretending to be impressed. “You’re making an effort.” I glare at her in the mirror.
“Why are they coming along though?” She asks. “Isn’t it going to be awkward?”
“I don’t know. I’ve never even seen this girl before.” I sigh. “I didn’t even know he was on a date last week.”
“Ae Ra, how long do you think you can keep this up?” She crosses her arms. “You not telling him, I mean.”
“I plan to keep quiet about this until another suitor comes along and sweeps me off my feet and I don’t have a crush on him anymore.” I say. “Then someday then I might tell him and we could laugh about it together.” I put on my ankle boots.
“You are so frustrating.” She says shaking her head.
“I am.” I agree with her. The doorbell rings. My date is here.
“Don’t have too much fun.” Mina deadpans from the kitchen. I shush her and open the door. Wonho stands there looking incredibly sweet, smiling at me.
“Ready to go?” He asks. “The other two are gonna meet us there.”
I nod. “Just let me grab my bag and scarf for one sec.” I reach behind the door and take my bag off the hook and tug my scarf from the coat hanger. “All set, let’s go.”
We start down the street towards the restaurant. He starts conversing with me, telling about what he’s studying and he’s thinking of taking an extra year just to do more research. I find it easy to talk to him and he’s quite funny.
Yet, if I’m being honest to myself, as funny and sweet as he is, I find myself wondering what it would be like to go on a date with Kihyun. I snap back to reality; I’m going on a date with Wonho, not Kihyun, I remind myself sternly.
We reach the restaurant and see Kihyun and Hye Ji, who undeniably looks really sweet and pretty which I have to admit, was not what I was expecting. It’s harder to hate if she looks like that. I mentally kick myself; stop being such a sore loser.
They’ve taken a booth seating, so we both slide in across Kihyun and Hye Ji. Kihyun discreetly gives me a thumbs up and I try to smile back at him.
A waiter comes to take our order and I survey the menu keenly. Ooh, there’s Farfalle with Chicken and Roasted Garlic. I’ll have that. As I tell the waiter my order, Kihyun looks up from his menu and says,
“No peas for her.” The waiter nods and makes a note on his pad. I look at him in surprise.
“Thanks.” I say.
“No problem.” He smiles and goes back to helping Hye Ji with her order. I drag my gaze away from him and remind myself, I may be feeling ridiculously flattered by his action, he only thinks of me as a friend and nothing else. As the waiter leaves with our orders, Hye Ji turns to me.
“I heard you’re going to be on the campus newspaper committee?” She asks. “That’s so cool!”
“Yeah, but I’m not going to write any articles or anything,” I give her a friendly smile.
“Kihyun’s shown me some of your work; I think your writing is really good!” She says enthusiastically.
“Thanks,” I say, surprised that he’s shown her my writing. I turn to him curiously.
“I showed her what you wrote for that state competition last year. I cut it out from the paper,” He explains.
“Oh.” I say, touched. Out of nowhere, he reaches across the table and gently tucks a strand of hair from my face.
“You’re messy as usual.” Kihyun says nonchalantly. But I can feel Hye Ji’s eyes on me and my face heats up, flustered. A silence follows but is thankfully broken by Wonho who starts talking about the story of how he and Kihyun met. I laugh in all the right places but I can’t help sneaking glances at Kihyun, who admittedly looks really good looking with his button up shirt and dark gelled hair.
Our food arrives. Before I even have time to look for it, Kihyun hands me the Cajun red pepper shaker. He knows I like to add chili or pepper flakes in my pasta. I take it from him gratefully.
Dinner progresses on. I finish the last bite of my pasta and reach for my water. Kihyun glances at me and says, “Your chin has sauce on it.” He makes to wipe it for me before I quickly intercept and wipe it with my own napkin.
“Thanks.” I say, avoiding Hye Ji’s gaze. I excuse myself to go to the ladies. I wash my hands thoroughly with soap while thinking over the events of the night. I barely get a thought straight when Hye Ji walks in. Our eyes meet in the mirror and we both smile awkwardly at each other.
“How long have you been friends with Kihyun?” She asks.
“Um, about 5 years.”
She nods. “And how long have you had a crush on him?” I stare at her in shock. How-?
She laughs. “Don’t worry, they’re male. They can’t tell.” I don’t know how to answer her.
“I-I don’t like him, that way.” I say weakly, knowing she won’t believe me anyway.
“I can tell you do.” She says softly. “No hard feelings.”
“I-I’m sorry.” I apologize. She chuckles. “Why would you apologize? C’mon, girl to girl, you like him, don’t you?” I nod.
“And is it anyone’s fault you like him?” She continues. I stare at her uncertainly. “Of course not! So you like him!”
“No, but I mean-“ I stutter. “You guys are dating now.”
“We’ve only been on two dates, including this one.” She shrugs. “Sure I like him, but I’m pretty sure…” She seems to think for a while and says, “You’ve liked him longer.”
“No!” I say too quickly. “I mean, not really. It’s just a crush, it’ll pass. Plus, he really likes you.” I add earnestly. She fixes a long gaze on me and shakes her head.
“Y’know, I’m not really sure about that.”
We emerge from the bathroom 20 minutes later and the guys are waiting for us by the door.
“Are you guys okay?” Wonho asks.
“Yeah.” I nod. “Why?”
“Well, for one, you guys were taking a long time.” Kihyun points out.
Hye Ji laughs. “Don’t worry. It’s just some girl talk.” Wonho and Kihyun exchange looks and shrugs. We all head outside.
“You don’t have to take me home,” Hye Ji says to Kihyun. She gives me an amused look.
“I can take you home. And Kihyun can take Ae Ra home,” Wonho says before Kihyun can object. He turns to me. “Is that okay with you?”
“Uh-yeah, I’m fine.” I say, confused. Hye Ji gives me a hug and whispers in my ear.
“Go get him.” I barely have time to react to that as she walks away with Wonho. Kihyun and I are left on the street, the both of us stare at their retreating backs, equally confused. We both turn to each other awkwardly.
“What was that all about?” I ask him.
He shrugs. “I don’t know.” He gestures that we should walk. After a while of quiet, he turns to me,
“So what did you think of Wonho?” He asks.
“Um, he’s a really nice person.” I nod, smiling.
“Oh, great.” He says, putting his hands in his pockets.
“It was really nice to meet to Hye Ji, by the way. She seems really nice.”
“Yeah, she is.” Kihyun smiles slightly and nods. We both walk along the uneven path, gravel crunching under our shoes. Out of nowhere, a series of hurried rings come from behind us and someone yells at us to move aside. Kihyun pulls me aside just as a bicycle zooms past us.
“What the heck.” He mutters under his breath as we watch the person cycle away. I’m starting to be aware that his arms are around me protectively and my face flushes. I clear my throat and then gesture to his arms. He lets go, as if he might have hurt me.
“You okay?” He asks.
Other than an oncoming fever? Yeah I’m fine. I nod at him.
He scratches the side of his head. “Did…Hye Ji say anything weird to you just now?”
I think back to what she said in the bathroom just moments ago. ‘Y’know, I’m not so sure about that.’ She said that when I said he liked her a lot. What does it mean?
“Why?” I dodge his question with one of my own. “Did Wonho say anything? He was kinda weird just now.” His face changes subtly as he thinks about. He meets my eyes and holds it for a long time. We both lapse into silence.
“She said,” I finally open up. “I mean, she got an idea that I was…” I look at him cautiously. “Into you. Like a crush, or something.” His expression slightly changes again.
“Why? What did Wonho say?”
“He said…” Kihyun starts quietly. “That I seemed to have feelings for you.” I look at him, alert but he looks ahead and not at me.
“I...”
“He also said that,” He hesitates. “Throughout the date, I kept looking after you. I mean, we’re friends right? That’s what I’m supposed to do. Right?” I avert my eyes from his face and try not to let disappointment show on my face.
He truly thinks that we’re just friends.
I keep silent. Should I agree with him?
“The thing is,” He continues quietly. “I think he might be right.” I widen my eyes and gape at him. He sees my reaction and smiles a bit nervously.
“What? Would it be…weird, if I have feelings for you?” He asks.
“I…” My lips are dry. My mind is blank. I don’t know what to say. He leans in and kisses my forehead softly.
“I’m saying,” He looks into my eyes. “I really, really like you, Ae Ra.” He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear and studies my expression.
I am lost right now. He’s saying the things I’ve dreamt he would say ever since I had a crush on him but I can’t quite believe it. Am I dreaming? Or hallucinating?
I pinch myself hard on my forearm. Ow! I jump from the pain. Kihyun, on the other hand looks very alarmed.
“What are you doing?” He asks, concerned.
“Nothing! I was just-“ I swallow. “Checking if I was dreaming or hallucinating…” He smiles amusedly.
“Listen carefully, Kang Ae Ra, because this isn’t a dream.” He says, grinning. His eyes crease slightly in a smile. “I like you.”
I finally break into a smile. “I like you too.” We both grin at each other. He takes my hand in his, stroking my thumb.
“But why’d you set me up on this date if you liked me?” I frown.
“Because I wasn’t sure, if I like you as a friend or more,” He shrugs.
“And setting me up with a date would help you make sure?” I ask.
“Frankly, yes.” He nods meekly. “When I set you up with Wonho, I felt uncomfortable and jealous. That was probably when I realised I had feelings for you…”
“Thank you.” I say softly and kiss his cheek. “Weird and don’t do that again, but thank you.”
“So you like me?” He confirms. I nod.
“Can I know when it started?”
I shake my head, laughing. “You’ll have to find out yourself.”
