Life isn’t easy, but we’re still here so that has to mean something
Gerard Way
While growing up with PTSD and depression in a dysfunctional household, music was a release. I didn’t know how to express my emotions but music was always there to help me understand them. My Chemical Romance was so important to me. It was my outlet, my support, my comfort that I wasn’t alone. They (specifically Gerard Way) spoke about their struggle with depression, they encouraged their fans to keep living, to love themselves, to be themselves, all of which I needed. It was a band that actually made a difference in my life, so that even when I haven’t listened to them in awhile, they always have a place in my heart.
I never got to see them live, their peak as a band was during the hardest years of my life and seeing a concert was impossible in my situation. However, I’m not disappointed that they aren’t together anymore. I’m not disappointed that they all moved on with their lives and no longer make music together. They moved on because that’s what was best for them and I am so happy for them. People complain that Gerard Way isn’t “as hot” as he used to be, but you know what? He’s happier. He has a family, he’s doing what he loves, he is no longer that suicidal kid who needed his music, and I am so grateful for that. He needed his music as an outlet and once he no longer needed it, he moved on. So fuck it if he isn’t your idea of attractive, he doesn’t need to be. He deserves to be happy and healthy.
I am sad that I never got to appreciate their music live but I don’t wish they got back together. I am thankful that they created their music, spoke out about suicidality and depression and self harm. I am grateful for the release that their music gave me when I needed it the most and even now at some points. They will always have a place in my heart and I will cheer Gerard Way on as he realizes his dream and moves forward in life. I will forever be a fan of My Chemical Romance, but I will also forever wish happiness on others and if his music no longer brought happiness then leaving the music scene was the best thing for him. I can’t wait to see where he goes next and I hope it brings him peace.
