• Etta Jones tonight on #TSFJazz • I thought about you gets a serious infusion of bluesy laid back swing in this live take of Etta Jones alongside #HoustonPearson on tenor sax, her longtime musical friend. Tonight I just wanted to remind all of my fellow #musicjunkies of #EttaJones ‘s greatness #madeinchina #vocalistsunite (at Tsf Jazz)

To show how far we've come, and with #ViolaDavis becoming the first #BlackWoman to win a #Tony an #Emmy and an #Oscar, here is the divine miss #DorothyDandridge who in 1955 became the first Black actress to be nominated for an #AcademyAward for #BestActress for her starring role in #CarmenJones (eventually losing out to #RitaMoreno). A Black woman wouldn't win the category until 2001 some 46 years later with #HalleBerry winning for her role in #MonstersBall. Dorothy began her career early as part of a singing duo with her sister Vivian that was started by her mother Ruby as a means to support the family after her divorce from Dorothy's father Cyril. The girls toured the #ChitlinCircuit under the name #TheWonderChildren while their mother worked and performed in Cleveland Ohio. During the Great Depression work dried up and eventually the family relocated to Hollywood where the Wonder Children became #TheDandridgeSisters featuring the girls' dance school classmate #EttaJones. The group continued strong for several years and eventually Dorothy transitioned to the screen appearing in several roles before her first credited role in Four Shall Die in 1940 a race film that did little to advance her career. She continued to get bit parts for the rest of the decade. There's a lot more to her story, she was incredibly influential.
