A Birthday Full of Familiar Faces (tangled oneshot)
Happy birthday Eugene Fitzherbert, loml
Set after the wedding short
Eugene was having a great 27th birthday. Then Cass walked in with a present even she could barely carry.
“Cass!” Rapunzel cheered, rushing straight towards her, helping her carefully place the present down on the throne room floor and then wrapping her in a bear hug. “I can’t believe you actually made it! You were in Vardaros two days ago!”
“Yeah, well there’s no way I was going to miss Eugene’s birthday,” Cass said, smirking at Eugene. “Everyone knows 27 is the most important year of a man’s life.”
Eugene smiled, trying to made his voice unconcerned as he said, “Well, it is me Cass, so every birthday is equally important.” His eyes flickered to the massive box. It was half as tall as Varian and as wide as Uncle Monty. The perfect size for a catapult, or a box of snakes.
Cass caught his look and smiled, and Eugene couldn’t tell if it was devious or genuine. He usually couldn’t tell that about Cass.
She looked around the throne room, seeing the large banner with a 27 and Eugene’s name on it, the bright balloons and nobles in fancy clothing dancing. “I’m getting deja vu.”
“Yeah, but you have an invitation this time, and you aren’t going to try and kill us,” Rapunzel said, and Eugene turned his head towards her. Invitation?
Cass laughed. “I’m going to say hi to Varian and Lance. Happy birthday, Eugene” she said, walking toward the back of the room where Varian was arguing with Angry about something.
Eugene immediately walked to Rapunzel, wrapping and arm around her shoulders. “I didn’t know you invited her.”
Her head jerked up. “You’re okay with it, right? I didn’t have time to ask because I wanted to get the letter out quickly enough. It must have slipped my mind.”
“No, it’s great! I’m just wondering what’s in that big present.” He pointed at it, narrowing his eyes.
“Oh come on, she wouldn’t ruin your birthday again,” Rapunzel said. “I’m sure it’s something totally normal.”
“Nothing about Cassandra is normal,” Eugene argued.
Rapunzel smiled at him. “Let’s just enjoy your birthday. Come dance with me.”
He sighed, “I can’t argue with that.”
As she dragged him toward the dancefloor, he forgot about the massive box sitting in the corner.
Cake cutting went peacefully with no dramatic entrances and the room remaining perfectly lit. Eugene couldn’t help but sink in the feeling of being surrounded by people who loved him and cared enough to be there for him. Even with his anxiety about Cass, he was glad she had come.
She was standing next to Rapunzel, eating her cake slowly. She definitely looked different than when he had first met her, and it wasn’t just her new outfit. Her confidence seemed less forced and her face didn’t fall as quickly.
He hadn’t been lying when he said Cass had become like his sister. She meant a lot to Rapunzel, and because of that, she would always mean a lot to him. He wasn’t worried about him trying to ruin his party.
He was just being dramatic about the present. Even if it was some practical joke, the worst that would happen would be him embarrassed in front of his friends and family.
Yikes. He still kind of hated that idea.
“Presents!” Rapunzel squealed, dragging him toward the pile before he had time to recognize the word. A chill was sent through him as he was sat right next to the ominously large box.
Rapunzel shoved present after present in his arms, unwrapping them impatiently when he was too slow. Lance gave him a new polisher for his helmet, Angry and Catalina a puffy coat that he knew was a jibe at the time he face planted in the snow in front of them, and Varian an anti wrinkle potion. His face got red as he quickly hid the bottle, but he was pretty grateful for it. He could see lines appearing on his forehead.
Finally, Cass shoved her box in front of him and Eugene hesitated, cringing back every time he unwrapped the paper around it a bit more. Cass was staring at him with a contempt smile, and Rapunzel’s eyes were glittering in anticipation.
Just get it over with, Eugene told himself. No point in dragging it out.
He opened the box, and filled to the brim were papers with his face on it.
“I couldn’t make it to the wedding, but there was a ton of publicity,” Cass explained. “I couldn’t go into a town without seeing you and Rapunzel every two steps. I know how much you love seeing your face so I grabbed all of them to give to you.”
Eugene grinned, looking through the papers. It was a mix of information about the date of the wedding, inquiries about when they could expect a royal heir (he quickly looked at Rapunzel and smiled at that), and articles, tons of articles all about him!
“Congratulations on making it onto a poster without being a convicted thief,” Cassandra added, and Eugene smirked at her.
“I’m sure you loved ripping off my face from every sign in the kingdom,” he said.
“A bit. But…” she hesitated, glancing at Rapunzel and back to him. “It was nice. Seeing you guys, reminding me of where I’m from.”
Rapunzel smiled. “We missed you too, Cass.”
“We did,” Eugene confirmed. “And thank you. You know me scarily well.”
“Keep your friends close and your enemies closer,” Cass joked.
Eugene smiled, putting back down the papers. “Alright, whoever can beat that can use me for the day as their personal guard.”
