The twins are teens!
Eugenia hits it off quite well with Edmund's new farmhand, Mr. Ernest Walter.
As the war rages on and her education progresses, Eugenia begins to plan for the future.
"If you and Virginia would agree, I think I will return home when I am finished school. Mother and Father could use the help, and I can always take up work at the school."
"You are happy with leaving the city?
"Yes, I miss Henford greatly, and our parents."
"I won't stop you then. It's kind of you to think of them so."
"Oh, thank you, Franny."
Weeks later, Eugenia begins her packing.
But news from the front lines interrupt her...
"Do you think John would propose to Virginia?"
"What do you mean? Why would you ask that?"
"It's not that strange to wonder. With George gone, he's the eldest son. Virginia seems to be the only girl he's fond of."
A sick feeling rises within Francis. This is the first she's considered such a possibility...it isn't a pleasant thought
With the war now over, Edmund returns to his family with his new wife.
Benjamin and Eugenie seem to have aged so much since last Edmund was home, though they are hardly fifty. The grief of losing John and George and their worries for Edmund have surely gotten to them.
Little Ben has grown so much since last Edmund saw him; he's nearly a young man!
Finally, Edmund nearly breaks down saying hello to Eugenia. Of all his family, he has admittedly missed his twin the most.
As the wedding approaches - and with it the possibility of John's leaving - the twins begin discussing their future more frequently.
Edmund admits that, should John decide to leave, he should be very happy to take over the farm from Father.
Eugenia, however, feels just as stuck as ever.
"It will be so lonely here with John gone. Mother and Franny always seem so sad, and Father is so occupied with his work lately. It'll just be you and I, really."
"And there's something wrong with it being us?"
"No! No, it's not that. Ed, I only have a few years left to return to school."
"Hmm, have you considered asking John if he and Virginia would have you?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, if he does move into the Addams home in Windenburg, then maybe he could take you along. Maybe you could enroll in school there."
"I hadn't considered that before. Do you think he'd really say yes?"
"It's John, I think he's as good a chance as any. Just ask him."
Eugenia approaches John later that evening. They sit in the kitchen, just the two of them.
It's a quick and definite yes from him.
The discussion seems to move John only closer to leaving the farm. At least he can be pretty certain that Edmund would step into his role should he leave.
