 ANTES MUERTA QUE SENCILLA - MARÍA ISABEL

Special post of the “spanishmaravillas” tag, because today it was officially announced that Spain is gonna return to Eurojunior this year, and I had to show you the legend, the queen that is María Isabel, winner of Eurojunior 2004, our most recent Eurovision winner, and Spanish Culture at its best, she made History of Spain, and she was the one who revolutionized flamenco, not that Rosalía everyone is talking about. Bitch, Rosalía is María Isabel’s apprentice!!

Also, Spanish music peaked at 2004 with this song, and of course with other such classics like “Bulería” and “Oye el Boom” from David Bisbal, “Retorciendo Palabras” from Fangoria, “Hablando en Plata” from Melendi, “Valió la Pena” from Marc Anthony, “Ella” from Bebe or “¿Por qué no ser amigos?” from Hombres G ft Dani Martín. Truly “Spanish maravillas”. Just wonderful.

Let’s go down the path of History with this one:

So, María Isabel. She’s andalusian (as most of flamenco-influenced singers are), specifically from Ayamonte (Huelva), and she won Eurojunior when she was 9. Like, I don’t know what you were doing when you were 9, but I’m sure it wasn’t winning an international singing contest with a BOP and becoming a true ICON for ages to come. As for me, I was watching Pokémon, Bobobo and Oliver & Benji at my Grandparent’s place while reading the latest W.I.T.C.H. comic and eating a nutella sandwich (the good ol’ days). Anyways, I think she’s still around, a few years ago she participated in a TV show where she had to impersonate other singers, and I think she’s releasing a new album soon or so I’ve heard.

The song is called “Antes muerta que sencilla” which would roughly translate to “Sooner dead than unpretentious / simple looking”.  It’s actually really positive and even maybe kinda feminist???. Oh, and, I don’t know if non-spanish speakers will notice this, but she has a heavy andalusian accent. 

Here goes (an attempt at) the translation:

For me this song is one of the signature songs of my childhood. It came out when I was 6, and I remember dancing to it at birthday parties and singing it with my family. My mother still reminds me to this day that I used to say, instead of “antes muerta que sencilla”, “antes muerta que sin silla”, which means “sooner dead than without a chair”, and I was really fixed on that, I actually believed those were the true lyrics.
