“Ouch! Mavis, what the ever-loving?!” Evan yelped when Mavis bit him on the ankle. “You are a bad influence on her,” he yelled through to Barty. She’d never done anything like that before Barty arrived.Â
“Maybe she’s trying to tell you something,” Barty smirked as he leant against the doorway. Mavis went over to him and wound around his ankles.Â
“Tiny traitor,” Evan grumbled at his cat. “Go on then, oh great cat whisperer, what is she trying to tell me?” Barty perked up.Â
“Mavis has requested a friend,” Evan looked at him sceptically.
“And how on earth have you come to that conclusion?”Â
“I showed her a picture of a cat, and she rubbed against him,” Barty told him easily.Â
“He?! Mavis is too young for a boyfriend.”Â
“Ah, but here's the thing,” Barty continued. “I think I might have found her dad,” he turned his phone around to show Evan, and Evan felt his mouth drop open.Â
“Wow, that is uncanny,” he said as he stared at the cat on Barty’s phone. It could be Mavis, except this cat was enormous, and she was tiny.Â
“Right?!” Barty beamed. “I’ve already filled in an application for him.”
“Wait. Wait, Barty, what?” He was going too fast. This was too fast, right? They barely knew each other. They’d been going out for days, not months, when Evan might have considered adopting a cat together. Barty was running at a hundred miles an hour. The excitement vanished from Barty’s face.Â
“He can stay at Sirius’s. I put his address on the form anyway. I want a cat, Evan. Besides, it could be ages before they get back to me and, anyway, they’ll probably say I’m not suitable enough to have a cat,” Evan let out an exasperated sigh and closed the distance between them. He took Barty’s face in his hands and pressed a sweet kiss to his lips.Â
“They'd be mad not to let you have a cat,” he stroked Barty’s cheek as his smile began to return. “We can at least go and meet him and see what he’s like. He might be an absolute tyrant for all we know,” he nipped Barty’s lower lip and let go of him.Â
Barty’s arms came around him, and he cradled him against his chest.Â
“No way, he’ll be perfect. I can just feel it.”
