Once upon a time, @evandiaz​ wrote “Love in the Time of TikTok”, and I told her right away that I was gonna podfic it one day because it brought me that much joy. It’s been a while, but the time has finally come! 💃

This podfic is an utterly chaotic mess, but enjoy? 😂

Summary: "It seems kind of dystopian to let millions of people know he’s in love with his best friend before telling said best friend first, doesn’t it?

Whatever. Fuck it.

It’s not like anyone he knows in real life watches his Tik Toks anyway, so he can be a little freer with the truth even if doesn’t tell his followers everything. He already keeps a tight cinch around his emotions when he’s at work, he can let his guard down a little on here, right?"

Wrong.

There was a lot of debate over how to make a podfic of this fic work, but finally, after tossing around some ideas with a few people, I came up with a plan. However, I was gonna need some help, so without further ado -

“ i could never hate you. not really. “ ✨

“Why do we keep letting this happen, Buck?” Eddie rubs his eyes, feeling worn to his core. 

Buck shrugs, looking down at his shoes. He crosses his arms and says nothing.

“I get that you’re mad,” Eddie continues, “I get it, but--”

“But nothing,” Buck cuts in, sounding just as angry as he had in the bar, “But nothing, Eddie. I’m mad.”

Eddie sighs, tipping his head back to look at the sky. He wishes he could see the stars, but the light pollution is so bad here that it barely looks blue, orange fighting for every corner. The door to the bar opens behind them and noise spills out, filling the space between them that feels too big for Eddie to cross alone. He dips his chin back down, looking across at Buck in his stupid white hoodie.

“I wish you would tell me why,” Eddie says, and holds up a hand when Buck’s jaw drops with rage, “I mean right now, what made you so mad that you had to yell at me in front of all our friends and get us kicked out of the bar?”

Buck huffs a breath through his nose like an angry bull. It would be funny under any other circumstances. 

“You,” Buck grinds out, and Eddie is transported back to his first day at the 118, Buck huffing and puffing and trying his best to blow Eddie’s house down. “You’re making me mad.”

Eddie rolls his eyes. “Yea, I figured that much out for myself.”

“God, Eddie.” It almost comes out like a whine. Eddie watches as Buck rakes his hands through his hair. “Can you stop acting like that?”

“Like what?” Eddie asks.

“Like you’re fine!” Buck bursts out. “Like everything’s normal and not falling apart! Like you haven’t gone the last three months refusing to say anything to me about anything real, like you--”

Eddie watches as Buck cuts himself off, seems to physically reign himself in and stow the anger Eddie knows is frothing beneath his skin. It makes Eddie mad.

“I will if you will,” he snaps, and Buck looks shocked.

“What the fuck does that mean?”

“It means if you’re mad, say it! If you want things to be different, say it! If you hate me--”

“I could never hate you,” Buck says harshly, and Eddie didn’t realize how close they’d gotten, “not really. I’m mad, Eddie, god, but--”

He struggles, tugging his hair in a way that makes Eddie want to reach up and smooth it back down. Buck sighs, finally, and sags, all his strings cut.

“I’m mad because I miss you,” he murmurs, “I’m mad because I’m worried, and because everything is out of control and you won’t let me in--”

“Buck,” Eddie cuts in, and he does reach out now, wraps his fingers tentatively around Buck’s where they’re limp at his side, “I don’t know what I’m doing.”

“I know,” Buck says softly, his eyes the bluest thing Eddie’s ever seen, “let me hear it anyway.”

I've had Strange the Dreamer on my list for ages

Not to like. Embarrass myself or anything. But I have an ARC, a published edition, and the audiobook which I re-listen to every January it is absolutely not an exaggeration to say it is my favourite book.

It does deal with some deeply fucked up stuff, and if you’d like a list of content warnings let me know, but I also cannot recommend it enough
