I'm pretty much on the same page as you, some of the lyrics and rhymes are quite clichéd and could've been replaced with some more creative options. For example if I really stop and think of "Lies" it does irk me a little bit, but in this case I think a few of the lines are absolute masterpieces which totally make up for the whole song. And I agree that probably in any other song a line like "You're never gonna love me/So what's the use" etc. is gonna sound incredibly tacky, but I love the fact that she actually uses this quite creatively. Usually a line like that is used if the song is about unrequited love in a way that the other person barley notices the narrator. This is the case in "Lies" as well, but it has a twist: she's very alone and feels unrequited love towards another person even though she is in a relationship with them. And that's a theme that hasn't been overdone in my opinion, even though it can be pretty common, which is why I think it appeals to a lot of people. I love the fact that she opens the song like that. Like "This is the deal: You don't love me. It's not gonna change whatever I do. You just don't and that is a fact" and the song is about coming to terms with it and letting go of a possibly poisonous relationship. Some of the lines are not so good from a songwriter's point of view but the really good ones ("You only ever touch me in the dark/Only if we're drinking can you see my spark/And only in the evening can you give yourself to me/'Cause the night is your woman/And she'll set you free") totally make up for it. In short, the song is so heartbreakingly honest and heartfelt you can't really blame it for it's small vices.

I totally agree about "Starring role"! It's actually one of my favourites, I think I even like it more than "Lies", lyrics wise that is. I love the verses and the opening. The lyrics are great and honest. From the very beginning the song struck me as reminding me of "Lover I Don't Have To Love" by Bright Eyes and "The Nobodies" by Marilyn Manson and I would've loved to see it live to it's full potential... but no. To me the chorus is disappointing- I do like the lyrics, but the melody and the hook are not really doing anything for me. They're too basic and not really epic enough. Then the song goes back to another verse and everything is great again. I don't know, I still love the song though, but I have a feeling that it could've been better if it would just stay that kind of dark and sinister instead of going full on pop in the chorus (not that I have anything against pop, but I prefer my pop being a bit eccentric :P)

"Teen Idle" however is nearly perfect in any way. I just wanted to mention it. It stays interesting until the end and it's the one Marina song I never skip :D

I agree that the placing of the tracks is really strange. It could've made the album so much more better, now "Hypocrates" completely breaks the atmosphere the other songs have created and the album never quite gets it back after that... In fact I have made my own playlist that has a completely different order of the tracks that I listen to when I listen to EH.

For some reason most songwriters start writing more simple songs when they grow older and get more experience (take for example Morrissey), which means two things. They are becoming better at what they do, which means they can now recap what they want to say to simpler songs. The other thing is that they're becoming worse at what they do because they're not quite as fresh and enthusiastic when it comes to songwriting and trying out new and even strange things :P

Fear and Loathing in my opinion is a perfect example of simple being better. It's very simple and almost clichéd at points (as are some of the rhymes) but it drives the point home and does it wonderfully. It's a very honest and liberating song and it says only what it has to. I must add a quote from John Lennon, when he was criticized about the Beatles song "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" being too simple: "When you're drowning, you don't say, 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me.' You just scream."

Aand that's not it, definitely, I still have lots of things to say but I think I'll quit now before I bore people to death xD Sorry about my English, it's not my first language.

Also, if you would like to hear my songs and maybe comment them I would be incredibly thankful. Seems like we share a love for criticizing things we like, so you're automatically cool to me xD
