I feel like I’ve given so many and I haven’t even scratched the surface here LMAO 

* When I say gritty when I refer to Kerrigan Byrne’s work, I mean it. She does not shy away from discussing issues of violence, colonialism, homophobia, sexual assault and the violence of the prison complex. I find her work all the more refreshing for it, however. Just a blanket content warning for her work. 

** this is not to say that these books contain misogynistic violence or outright sexual assault, nor are they explicitly racist or demeaning. They do, however, contain elements that make me have to stop and critically engage with the text. This includes issues of coercion, race relations, and colonialism. It’s not that these are explicit themes in these novels (with the exception of The Highlander and Liam’s past in the army) but they are things that I had to process before I could enjoy the book. Having said that, if it's on the list, I enjoyed it despite any of this which means it can’t be too bad.  They’re not flawless, and some are definitely a product of their time, but they’re also not as bad as some of the stuff out there.

Crash by Eve Silver is the highly anticipated conclusion to the Game series. It definitely does not disappoint. This book has an amazing balance between contemporary and sci-fi. Crash is so fast-paced and is the perfect ending to the series.

Push, book 2 in Eve Silver’s the Game series, is a fast-paced story influenced by the gaming world. This book is wonderfully written and includes an amazing plot and a courageous protagonist.

Hidden by Eve Kenin

Series: Northern Waste, #2 Read time: 3 Days Rating: 4.5/5

The events of Hidden take place about 6 months after the end of Driven. With novella Frozen acting as a bridge between the two. I think that the Northern Wast books could be read stand-alone but I wouldn't recommend it. Frozen introduces the plague that plays a role in the plot of Hidden. The books are a bit fast and loose with time frames. But there are years in Hidden, they are significant. The prologue is clever. It is a rewrite of a scene from Driven during Bane's training. Tatiana only had an 11% chance of surviving that session but she did, something Wizard and Yuriko never knew. For someone who hadn't read the 1st book, it would be a decent lay of the land but it's more for readers. Importantly it introduces two key concepts Tatiana thinks Yuriko is dead and Dr Gavin Ward the books big bad (who makes Bane look like a saint).

For those who have read Driven Tatiana is Yuriko and Wizards younger sister. Raised like them by a computer she has little understanding of emotion. But unlike them she didn't initially develop superhuman healing abilities, she developed a form of telepathy. This telepathy allows her to present herself as more human than Wizard, though she has had to grow up hard and fast. Something I want to say about Ana that maybe disliked of projecting. Ana might be a Demisexual, an inexperienced one with little awareness of what the term but demi none the less. Yes, she is sexually inexperienced before Tristan but the description was intriguing (as I said projecting).

Tristan is fascinating, Tatiana refers to him as a strange man multiple times. He is a complex mix of tinkerer, philosopher, scientist and fighter. Like 90% of romance novel leading men, he's stunning, indigo eyes? Be still my heart. He's very much not what he appears. His linguistic patterns are clever, they are contemporary (00's) American. Not the futuristic of the rest of the characters given his background that is an important detail. Tristan is a readable hero, to be honest.

Like Driven this is a character more than a plot-driven book. It is more about Tatiana and Tristan and their pasts, futures and baggage than it is about the plague. The plague which will eventually destroy all life in the Northern Waste was created using samples of Tatiana's blood and Tristan is the only man who might be able to find a cure. Reavers and cannibalism are involved. The larger focus is healing scars and revealing secrets wrapped up in some pretty quotable writing and generally good writing.

This is a 4.5-star book the ending lets it down. The ending feels rushed, something that has been worked towards for two books is done with little more than a couple of paragraphs, there are some unanswered questions and there is no real closure on the plague that is one of the core plot points. But overall it is gorgeous, the main couple are wonderful and their development is engaging. (well this review is longer than anticipated, sorry bout that)

Frozen by Eve Kenin

Series: Northern Waste, #1.5 Read time: 1 Day Rating: 4/5

This is a gorgeous addition to Driven. Unlike Driven which is a couple finding each other, Frozen a developing relationship between two quite different people very much used to being alone. Wizard has to find out that Raina can fight for herself, Raina needs to remember how much she has to lose with him. Though like Driven it has something of a time issue, there really is no telling how long after the first book it is set or passage of time within the story itself. There are some beautiful passages in here, mostly Wizard being his quirkily romantic self, also really bad jokes. That said nothing of true significance happens. The base is moved Tatiana is confirmed alive (but readers knew that) and the loving couple discover a lab. It's short, I read it in about 90 mins but it does feel like a welcome addition. Definitely, for fans, there is little to no situational explanation, it requires knowledge of at least Driven to make sense.

I think it's important to note that Frozen was published in 2016 some 10 years after Driven and it's a sequel, Hidden. I find myself questioning why it was written, why an author would return to a book 10 years later and write a novella. The obvious answer I came to was fan demand. Frozen was Eve Kenin's way of giving fans something they wanted, more Raina and Wizard, something on Yuriko and Trey and more information on the mysterious Tatiana (if you're reading them in reading rather than publication order). While it does still leave the reader with more questions about some events it does act as a bridge between the Northern Waste books. It can help situate a reader, Hidden makes references to events in Frozen.
