Have a story to tell?
Story-worthy photo by Ed Hunds
As part of Mount Rainier's Centennial Celebration, the park will host a storytelling night at the Paradise Inn at 8:30 p.m. on the evening of August 6. Ranger Curt Jacquot is gathering storytellers for the event, which will be hosted by Ranger Jim Ross. If you are a volunteer and have an amazing or interesting 5-minute story to tell, please e-mail your story nomination, with a brief description, as soon as possible to Curt_Jacquot [at] nps.gov. As the storytellers say, "may you have a story-worthy summer!"

Evening Program
Last night (August 9th) I gave me evening program on birding. The original outline of the program was going to be a quick presentation on how to start birding and then go for a walk to try and find birds. Thankfully, I ran into another ranger who works with a lot of the junior rangers and she gave me a coloring activity in case I needed it. I was very grateful for this because it started to rain in the afternoon and even though it cleared up by 7:00 there were no birds on our birding walk. Another problem was that it was not advertised for people to bring their own binoculars and the park does not have any. This left three pairs for twenty-six people. Although we didn't see any birds I think the night could be considered a success. I think if I were ever to do this program again, I might spend more time on the introduction and place pictures of birds in the trees so if no birds are spotted on the hike I can make it more of a scavenger hunt with the kids trying to find the birds.
It was a good learning experience.
