The Myth of Bridezilla

Being a Wedding planner, I am constantly asked about my best “Bridezilla” stories. Fortunately, I have never experienced a “Bridezilla”. The bride is typically lovely to work with. The true bridezilla is usually the moms. Even the youngest couple I have worked with, age 22, was incredibly easy to work with. When the moms and the dads get involved, things get more complicated. It’s surprising to me how increasingly involved the groom’s family has become in the process. Although this may be great for some, this means more people involved. That also means more “bridezillas”,  whether it’s the bride’s mom, groom’s mom, bride’s dad, etc. If there are more people involved, you’ll naturally get more opinions, suggestions, and “two-cents” about the wedding. While I mainly want to focus on the bride and her vision, it can be hard to get around the mom in order to make that happen. Whomever is paying for the wedding of course gets an opinion but lets remember whose day it is. 

A True Bridezilla Moment

           My mom told me a funny story when I was growing up about one of her friends and her mother. As soon as the daughter got engaged, the mother started planning the wedding. It was not what the daughter wanted and she threw a fit about it. The mother calmly said that since she is paying for the wedding, she will also be planning the wedding. She explained that her mother planned her wedding and one day you can plan your own daughters wedding. While this may work for some people, it usually doesn’t work all the time. It is not the best philosophy to go by. If something goes wrong in that story, we may have a multiple bridezilla situation.

Who Do I like to Work With? 

The Bride. Always. This is typically the person with the overall vision for the wedding. In my opinion, the more Type-A, the better. This way she knows exactly what she wants the wedding to be like. I know from personal experience, I could picture my entire wedding before it happened. I knew where all the tables were going, what the tent would look like, everything! While there may be adjustments and certain budget constraints, the wedding is all about the bride. Sorry grooms, just being honest! While people may like to see the groom’s reaction to the bride walking down the aisle or feel the day is about both of them, that is great, but we remember the dress, hair, all the little details that made this bride glow that day. The groom is in a suit. The bride hand picks the flowers leading up to the wedding, picks the linen, what the escort cards look like, etc.

How to Avoid Bridezilla

           Bridezilla is usually a result of the little details of the wedding. If you are wrapped around the small details of the wedding, it could be hard to truly enjoy this special day. At my sister’s wedding, the DJ played the wrong song for the first dance, he even had a CD well labeled and ready to go! This is hysterical and no one knows or cares other than the bride and groom! You just have to remember to forget the small things and shift your focus to the bigger picture. Another thing that happens is that the mom will call me about some “surprise” she wants at the wedding. I say absolutely not. Everything needs to be out in the open. If it’s not, that can be a recipe for disaster. Nobody wants to be surprised on their wedding day and everyone wants the vendors to set up like it’s an everyday routine.

Every Bride sets out not to be bridezilla, but the moms make no such promises. To all my brides out there, the less people that you have involved, the more sane you will be before/after the wedding. Of course, involve your mom. You still want her to be a part of this day! Most importantly, if you do become bridezilla, don’t let your guests see it. Everything could go wrong…it could be raining cats and dogs for crying out loud. As long as the bride slaps a smile on and her face says “this is the best day of my life”, everyone else will love your wedding also.
