Andi and Lu are getting married, and they’re having a bachelorette weekend with their closest friends. Lu’s sister, Nikki, shows up late and then she sleeps with Josh. During a night out, Lu lets slip that she’s never had an orgasm, which she’d kept from her partner by faking it.

I feel like I have a low bar for queer comedies, especially romantic comedies, because there just aren’t that many of them and I get really excited when our stories are told on screen. Wikipedia calls The Feels (2017) a “dramedy,” which feels like a nothing category that only describes a mixed tone. There certainly is a lot of drama though, and it doesn’t always feel earned. When Lu and Andi have a fight, I definitely know whose side I’m on. The comedic parts work much better.

The best character in this film is Helen, or Regular Helen, played by Ever Mainard, who is Lu’s best friend from culinary school. She’s a gender non-conforming weirdo who says what’s on her mind. The rest of the group seems wary of her at first, but she becomes the life of the party. The film is peppered with talking heads of the characters describing their first orgasms, and Helen’s monologue about reading her aunt’s romance novels at her grandma’s house is hilarious and wonderful.

Overall, I’d say this is a fair women-loving-women romantic-comedy, with some highs and lows. I didn’t fall in love with the film, but I definitely fell in love with Regular Helen.
