I have been binging Clint Eastwood's filmography and...I have thoughts, but I don't know if I can articulate them.

But there definitely is a difference between Clint Eastwood before he controlled the direction and production of his work and after, which like, is obvious but the stories that he tells after hit so goddamn hard

In the last two weeks I have watched Joe Kidd (1972), the Dollars trilogy (1964-1966) [obviously been obsessed with Rawhide for like six months now], Million Dollar Baby (2004), Unforgiven (1992), and Gran Torino (2008)

and like

I'm not going to go shouting from the rooftops that Clint Eastwood is a great man or anything (idk I think he's complicated and I'm trying very hard not to develop too much of a parasocial relationship with this old white guy who is definitely going to die soon [he's like, really old])

but like

he's definitely more than a Conservative White Guy Who Represents Macho American Masculinity (tm) like I half-thought he was like a year ago

like it's kinda obvious that he's been intentionally trying to deconstruct the very image that made him so famous in the 1960s-1970s

and like, yeah, Progressives(TM) probably have a laundry list of what he's done wrong trying to deconstruct this image and how he's actually enforcing it blah blah blah (and I'd probably agree with them on most of it too) but it does seem like he's made a honest fucking effort

and beyond the politics of Clint Eastwood as an individual

he just tells good fucking stories, imo

idk I might have a different opinion after I watch the Dirty Harry movies but this is where I am right now

Also, in my brain John Wayne and Clint Eastwood occupied the same Straight White Conservative Men Macho Yay Sexism and Racism is Cool block in my brain so now I'm wondering if John Wayne was also more complicated as an individual?

as someone very involved in local non-partisan politics, the fact that he ran for a term for mayor of his California town, did what he wanted to do in office, and THEN DIDN'T RUN AGAIN says a lot about a person because let me tell you, I am now the president of a small non-partisan organization (we have like 300 members) and I have been shocked at how enticing having political power is, and I am understanding why people stay in Congress for decades because if I'm feeling the allure of power just by being president of this itty bitty organization, what would it be like to be on the School Board, or City Council, or Mayor, or State Leg or Congress???

But Eastwood was frustrated with his local city council, ran for office, made a bunch of changes that he thought were good and then just went back to his movies. Like, that's a lot harder than people think it is.

Yes, I am deliberately delaying rewatching OG MacGyver because I am in the middle beginning of a Rawhide longfic and I am terrified if I rewatch MacGyver my Hyper-Fixation (tm) will switch from Rawhide to MacGyver because a few months ago it switched from Bonanza to Rawhide and I still have a Bonanza fic to finish.

Okay, admittedly, this might be a high brain thought, but did they have Joe & Hoss doing roundup as a nod to Rawhide in 7x20 (Peace Officer) because they had Eric Flemming guest starring? Because like, I'm high, and I haven't watched any tv show but Rawhide in a hot minute, and for a whole 30 seconds I'm like "Why are Joe and Hoss on Rawhide? Wait, why is this in color??" because they're herding cows!
