The other day I drove an hour to get a cheap bakers rack for my plants. I happened to notice Goodwill was open and it started calling my name. I found a huge picture that I had been wanting for 6 years now. I never thought I’d be able to get a big version. I figured I’d end up with something around 11”x17”. But there it was, a framed $300 picture of the dirt road from Evergreen Plantation in New Orleans, LA. It was marked $65. Everything was 10% off for the reopening. The cashier typed the price wrong and put $35. She looked at it for a moment, shrugged, and said “I guess we’ll just go with that.” I paid and...it wouldn’t fit in my car. I had to run to Lowe’s for twine and tie it to the roof. The one hour drive home became a two hour slow drive down back roads with multiple stops to check the rope and multiple pulling onto the shoulder to let people pass. I had it face down, on a rug I keep in my car, to protect the picture. Backing paper started ripping off and flying behind my car as I drove, but the artwork didn’t get hurt. I got it home and went to putt it above the mantle and it’s too big to hang! It has to sit on the mantle and lean against the wall. The picture is 36”x48” and the frame makes it 48”x60”. It’s HUGE! NOLA - Saturday 20/04/2019

Today was incredible!!

We got up very early and hopped on the tour bus of “ The Old River Road Plantation Adventure” for an organised trip to 2 plantations and a swamp.

Our first stop was “Oak Alley Plantation”. It’s pretty obvious how it got its name. Beautiful big live oaks filled the domain. We had a small tour inside the house and got time to take pictures outside afterwards.

Next stop was “Evergreen Plantation”. Some might recognize this place since it has been used in various movies. As the matter of fact, they were working on a setting for a new movie when we got there.

This plantation was our favorite. Our guide was amazing! She told us so much about this plantation’s history and about slavery in Louisiana in general! I learned a lot. For example, did you know slavery in Louisiana was not that bad? Slaves were not mistreated like you see in those Hollywood movies. Shocker for me! So, if you ever go to New Orleans, do a plantation tour, I highly recommend it!

In the afternoon we got on a boat in a swamp. We saw alligators and racoons. At the end, we even got to hold a baby alligator! To see one up close is very interesting, we loved it!

We arrived back at our hostel in the late afternoon. We were exhausted so took a powernap.

In the evening we went to Frenchmen Street, next to Bourbon Street the place to be. The vibe over here was ‘less drunk’ and more jazzy than Bourbon Street in my opinion. We enjoyed a couple of live bands, a street market with art and accessories, the overall atmosphere. It was a great night!

Oh and I got a tattoo. No I was not drunk. I have been thinking about getting something to represent my year over here and thanks to Florence I finally had the courage to go for it. So I got my own version of the Texas Star. I know I don’t need a tattoo to remember my time in Dallas but it’s nice to see it every day, it makes me appreciate it more. Next to that it also just makes for a good story!
