Evergy resumes rolling blackouts in Lawrence, across region | News, Sports, Jobs

Evergy, the predominant electric provider in Lawrence, resumed rolling blackouts Tuesday morning in an effort to ease the strain on the region’s power grid.

The company said it had shut off power to about 60,000 customers for 30 to 60 minutes on Monday afternoon, and it began similar planned blackouts around 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to the company’s social media accounts.

Utilities throughout the region were asked to implement the rolling blackouts as power plants in the central U.S. were struggling to keep up with the high demand for electricity to heat homes and businesses during one of the coldest periods in recent memory. The air temperature in Lawrence as of 8 a.m. Tuesday was around 20 below zero, and the National Weather Service in Topeka predicted wind chills could reach as low as 30 below before noon.

Residents weren’t being given any advance notice that their neighborhood had been chosen for a rolling blackout, and emergency radio traffic monitored by the Journal-World indicated that numerous major intersections in Lawrence were without power as of 8 a.m. Tuesday. A press release from Evergy on Monday did not provide information on how Evergy was choosing which locations to experience temporary power outages.

City of Lawrence crews were working to get temporary signs in place at intersections without power, the city said around 8:20 a.m. But because of the number of traffic signals out, the city warned that crews may not be able to get to them before the power is restored.

The University of Kansas and many Douglas County school districts, including Lawrence public schools, closed Tuesday because of the cold weather and in anticipation of more power disruptions. Other facilities, including City of Lawrence buildings, closed in an effort to conserve energy. Evergy and other regional utilities, including natural gas provider Black Hills Energy, are asking their customers to take steps, if possible, to reduce their electricity usage during the cold weather.

Whether additional power outages will happen in future days will depend partly on events that stretch far beyond Kansas. Kansas is part of a system called the Southwest Power Pool. Its territory stretches over 17 states, including parts of Texas and other southern states that are seeing historically cold temperatures that have fueled record high electricity usage.

All power produced by Evergy — which previously was known as Westar Energy — is part of the Southwest Power Pool grid. If electricity demands in the other states part of the Southwest Power Pool remain high, that could affect the need for rolling blackouts in places like Kansas.

Temperatures in the Lawrence area are expected to warm slightly over the coming days, but wind chills will likely remain below zero until late this week.
