The cabin for the most part was left unused, a gift from Tony a few years back to help the old solider get out of the city. But, as winter got closer Steve found himself there more often. Cutting firewood and prepping the small dwelling for the blizzards to come, one thing that had yet to change about New York. A storm was approaching that evening, he had plenty of food and supplies to last a few weeks, another gift from Tony if things got bad or if Bucky decided to stay a while.
Shuffling around the kitchen trying to decide what to eat he was surprised to see headlights in the distance, a small car coming down the drive. The phone on the wall hadn’t rang, nor the smaller one that Fury insisted he keep nearby. Just in case. An unannounced visitor was rare. Wiping his hands on the kitchen towel then moving toward the door Steve grabbed his jacket, the car parked close enough. Government plates and tinted windows all screamed SHIELD. Stepping onto the porch he was surprised to see the dark haired woman step out, a smile broke over his face in recognition. “Bit chilly isn’t it?”
Getting her inside to warm the snow was falling fast, no doubt they’d get over a foot in the next few hours. Steve was starting to doubt she’d be able to make it. The truck he brought could, but it didn’t seem worth risking the icy roads. “Can I get you something warm? Got coffee or tea. I’ll start on dinner soon” he slid his jacket and boots off leaving them by the front. A warm smile still adorned his face as the witch settled, “Looking like we might be stuck here a while. Storms here early,” walking past her toward the living room he glanced at the fire that provided most of the light for the room.
“You wanna tell me what made you want to drive this far out? Couldn’t have been just to say hello. Not that I don’t mind the company.”
Admittedly, most of the driving was handled by the SHIELD-issued car, but that didn’t stop her from being worried about the snow all along the way. But once Wanda got it in her head to do something, she was going to do it, and do it whole-heartedly. There was no going halfway and turning around or trying to push it off to another month that was less snowy. But, she didn’t really have a lot of experience driving in this intense of snow. The driving tests in Sokovia weren’t very intensive, and her and her brother rarely had left the city.
So, she couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief when she safely pulled the car up to the cabin. And her grin only widened when she saw Steve out there to greet her. She shrugged as she got out of the car, pulling her coat tighter around herself at the temperature change from inside the car to the snowy outside. “Only a bit.” She was just now realizing she maybe needed to upgrade her winter wardrobe, since she tended to consider aesthetics over utility when it came to sweaters and coats. “Some tea would be great. I’d only be jittery if I get coffee right now.” She had enough trouble sleeping as it was. She followed suit, shedding her jacket and shoes, padding along close behind him before settling herself down in front of the fire.
“I…” she glanced down, playing with a frayed edge on her sweater. “This time of year is hard, you know? And I was just feeling it…” She shrugged. “I did not really think through that I was going to get stuck I just…” A lot of the other Avengers had families they could preoccupy themselves with during the season, or she just wasn’t close to them like she was with Steve. “I just did not want to be so lonely, and hoped you would not mind the company.”
