i actually think cal would struggle to truly terrify bro with his nightmares once bro reached a certain age. he'd make bro's childhood absolute hell with constant night terrors, but once bro gets a little older, he's so used to them he's practically inured to them. like "oh, another dream about violently murdering a clown except no matter how many bullets the clown is riddled with he keeps crawling after me. yawn. what else is new."

cal has to keep picking up on new anxieties to exploit. escalating nightmare arms race: cal's relentless malice vs. bro's increasingly blasé attitude towards all manner of violence and harm to himself

on the other hand, once dave comes along, that gives cal a whole new set of material to work with…

wait guys my fucking cat this morning

was just CRYING AND CRYING outside my door. and she wouldn’t go in anyone’s room. my door just happened to be closed today and it usually isn’t, but she usually doesn’t come to my room inthe morning anyways!!

she’s like SCRATCHING ON MY DOOR AND MEOWING SO SADLY. my mom’s door is open, my dad’s, my brother’s. but she just won’t go in any. i’m thinking maybe she’s hungry. but she’s not! her bowl is full.

so i finally get up and open my door

that cat-child does not come in my room

she never wanted to come inside my room

she just wanted me to wake up.
