Nishikiyama’s relationship with Kiryu is very complicated. Of course, he sees him as his family; but as he started realizing that everything he had obtained and his status were all to keep Kiryu around simply felt like a stab in his back. And he just felt like everything came crashing down after Kiryu left, all the reasons why Kiryu even left—Yuko’s health and Yumi’s safety—were beyond Nishiki’s hand to “fix.”
Personally, I don’t think he ever stopped loving Kiryu as his brother (or more because toxic yaoi yay). But I do believe seeing him just triggers irrational anger because he can no longer separate Kiryu from the people that praised him for something Nishiki did.
He genuinely wishes they never fell apart but knows that there’s no way to recover what was lost after all he went through. And many things he went through were to eventually welcome Kiryu back, which probably angers him even more. He would’ve done so much for his brother and everything was just thrown back at his face.
His complex relationship with Kiryu is one forced upon him by others until he believes himself he has to become better than. He has drilled in his memory the fact that had he been the one taken for Dojima’s murder none of the efforts made for Kiryu’s comeback would have been equally made for him. His whole idea of being an equal to Kiryu shattered.
I think his death also echoes the fact that he never really stopped seeing Kiryu as family. It’s only then when he realizes what he lost trying to become someone who he never was. He blows it all up hoping to reclaim his spot as Kiryu’s brother, his partner in crime, someone who would do his best to keep the person he appreciates the most “safe.”
