For week ten, we covered chapter six, Media in Everyday Life. The chapter was about how media had an effect on our everyday life. Throughout a typical day as a human, we are exposed to thousands of sources of media. From the social media on our phones to the billboards we pass on the highway. The chapter also introduces "the masses" as another word for "the people," as in a large group of individuals. For example, mass media is a way to communicate with a large group of people in the media. Media also can be manipulated very easily, so it is hard to dictate what is true and false. Therefore, you should not believe everything you see on social media. In a later chapter, we learned about framing. Framing is very prominent on social media. People will create something that favors them to persuade you to believe what they want you to believe. The media allows information and events to be spread very quickly. For example, the fight for abortion rights was widely publicized due to the media.
I enjoyed this chapter six because sometimes we don't realize the media's influence on our everyday lives. Mainly because it is more "normal" to have media than it is to not have it. I also liked that we went over the big six because many companies seem to compete against other companies, but in reality, they own both. Also, framing is very popular, especially on social media such as Instagram. People will allow others to think they are perfect humans with no flaws. By posting only what makes them look good. This falsifies many social media pages, therefore, creating false realities and hopes.
This is an image I found on a light pole on my way to class a couple of weeks ago. This, to me, represented how hooked we are to technology and social media. Seeing the explosion in the background shows that we are missing so much in everyday life because of the distraction social media has. Sometimes when I'm walking around campus, I look at people's hands to see how many people have their phones in their hands at all times. Usually, 8 or 9/10 people do.
