For as long as Lan Wangji has been alive, he has been ruled by the family curse. He knows he will doom the one he gives his heart to. It is the reason the only life he’s known is within the four walls of the Jingshi.
That is, until a stranger slings one leg over the wall; two jars of liquor dangling from his hand and calling out a tentative hello.

Whoever owns the heart of a Lan will be beset by endless hardship, the elders have told him and his brother. Look at your mother. A harmless rogue cultivator until she met your father. She had killed his teacher and was punished with seclusion. Bad things befall those whom a Lan loves, whether or not they return that affection. So the elders exhort, Guard your heart. Don’t give it to anyone.
“Do you have someone you love?” he asks.
“So many. My shijie. Jiang Cheng. Uncle Jiang. The aunty who gives me free water chestnuts.” Wei Ying’s eyes sparkle.
“Are you jealous?” Wei Ying knocks their shoulders together, playful even when talking about the thing that has ruled and ruined how Lan Wangji has lived his whole life. “If and when you fall in love, Lan Zhan, I would be jealous. I bet you would pick that person carefully.”
“And they would be cursed,” Lan Wangji reminds him.
Wei Ying grins. “For you, it would be worth it.”
He gives such sweet words so frivolously. Lan Wangji should ignore them.
Do you know how much I’ve relied on this curse to keep going?”
It is a statement so bizarre that Lan Wangji raises his head to see Wei Ying fidgeting.
“Whenever some new problem comes up and makes me feel like giving in, I remind myself that this is proof that you love me. It makes me strong.”
“I have always thought that I was the luckiest person in the world because you chose to give your heart to me,” Wei Ying says.
Behind him, Lan Xichen turns to stone.
Wei Ying continues, “I thought, ‘ah, since I’m the one, I have to make sure I’m worthy of it.’ Do you remember those promises I made on our lantern?” Protect the weak, fight injustice, no regrets. “I kept them.”
Lan Wangji’s breath stalls in his throat.
Wei Ying shakes his hand, almost playfully. “You make me brave.”
Whoever a Lan loves gets cursed and unlucky for life. WWX still considers LWJ’s love a gift that keeps him going in his darkest moments, which is kind of grim, but also so beautiful. After WWX’s death, LWJ stays at the Burial Mounds with the Wens, the curse gets broken, and Wangxian finally get their much-deserved happy ending ❤️
