My life is so rote
Open Mic Night
My high school's literary magazine is called Serendipity. Until this year, all that really happened with it was submissions and a magazine at the end of the year. This year, things changed.
They assigned officers: there are two co-presidents, two fiction editors, one non-fiction editor, two poetry editors, and a few art related officers. (I think). I'm one of the two poetry editors, so I was asked to help organize an open mic night that would promote an event in February.
In the simplest terms possible, it was a massive success in so many ways. We had a turn out of 20+, with people I'd never seen before performing, and their families came to watch. It was cozy, and fun, and everyone was happy. (My anxiety ebbed after a little while. Probably shouldn't have had the espresso.)
Suffice it to say, I am incredibly proud of what happened last night and am also insanely grateful for my fantastic coworkers, both at the coffee shop and in Serendipity, all of whom keep me from going crazy.
The owner of the shop was so pleased with the turn out that he asked us to come back, and start having open mic nights once a month. It has made me so happy I don't really even have words for it.
Joining the club/magazine this year has given me responsibilities separate from everything that I'm currently doing, and has given me new opportunities (I've been asked to be a part of the meeting when they're going to organize the event in February) and gotten me to actually introduce myself to people and stand in front of an microphone being nervous but realizing that no there is really judging me, and if they are, I really have no reason to care.
It was a fantastic event, and the rest of the night wasn't half bad either..
