The chapel clings to a cliff

We worship inside

Away from cutting wind

Rose petals of pink and white

Everything is Meaningless

Some days I just want to turn off all the light, cover my head with a pillow and just stay in bed forever. Sometimes getting out of bed is a real struggle. Every now and then, I can’t see meaning in anything in life. Whenever I feel like this, I honestly just want to shout at God, and ask him why He placed me on this earth with no purpose.

On days like that, my brain spins around and around, I don’t feel like smiling, and I only want to cry. However, people have felt like this for centuries. The author of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament starts his book with: “ ‘Meaningless! Meaningless!’ says the Teacher. ‘Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless’ ”(Ecclesiastes 1:2, NIV). This might not seem like an encouragement to you, but to me, it made a huge difference. It made me realize that I’m not alone.

Nonetheless, it doesn’t end there, and the conclusion of the book of Ecclesiastes is a whole lot more reassuring and bright. The author wraps up the book by stating that the even though life might seem meaningless sometimes, the meaning of life is to have a relationship with God. We are created to love and honor Him. Furthermore, the author clearly states that we are supposed to eat, drink and enjoy life as well. We are allowed to enjoy the enjoyments life brings, because everything doesn’t have to be deep and serious.  

Although, life might seem meaningless occasionally, I know that shouting at God doesn’t solve the problem. He has placed us on this earth with a purpose and He has a plan for our life. We might not see the meaning right now, but God knows what He is doing.
