I actually came to a similar realization while reading one of EGT’s fics. I vividly remember devouring “Next Big Thing” and falling in love with it but every few chapters my brain would go “why isn’t anything happening?! That’s the perfect place for something to happen!” and I was so confused but it drew me in and I just kept reading. I had to actually give myself permission to enjoy it. I finally realized I’d been trained almost from birth to value a certain kind of story telling (mostly a male point of view, mostly big sequence action oriented and heavy handed plot driven) and so I was finding it hard to recognize anything that deviated from that as something just as, if not more, valuable even though I loved it! I’ve read “Next Big Thing” multiple times now and adored it each time and now I can see that there all kinds of things happening they’re just on a different scale. A much more intimate one. Reading this kind of story is like fitting yourself between the words and living with these people. There’s no barrier. I will be always be grateful to EGT and other fanfic authors for opening my eyes.
Awwww, NBT is such a perfect fic for this! It goes on and on and just when you think there’s going to be some huge plot twist...it deflates because everyone communicates with each other so effectively lol. I HAD SO MUCH FUN WRITING THIS.

This happens in the art world and in art school also. I discovered quickly that talent had nothing to do with the recognition needed to further your career (e.g. acceptance to shows and galleries, consideration for public projects, commissions, mentoring, perceived value of work) but gender was very important. I came to view women's creativity in whatever form it took as an act of defiance. It still is.
YES. I totally believe that wrt art and art school, and women’s creativity is so amazing and so important.
