I've come to the conclusion that I've spent too much time on Craigslist recently.
Since I quit my old job at the beginning of May, I've been quite busy with Google I/O, moving, friends, and finding things to do in general. Since I (like many other people) like money, specifically having some, I've been on Craigslist looking for short computer gigs to drum up some spare cash. So far, about a month in, I've only managed to land 4 one time things, for a grand total of about $250. That's not really very good, and certainly a lot less than I was hoping for. On the plus side, I've only had to do maybe 5 hrs of work total. Still, for every gig that I've managed to get, there are about 5 that I don't.
I'm thinking part of my problem here is that I'm only looking on the low end so far, easy work like recovering data off a dead computer, virus/spyware removal, computer setup, all basic IT work. Unfortunately, it seems like everyone in the LA area is looking for CMS work, web design work, or a full-timer. (why post under one time gigs people?) I know I have a pretty broad range of skills, and am fairly certain I can probably outmatch most people applying for these type of jobs, perhaps I should consider better publicity instead?
The second thing I've been up to on Craigslist recently is dealing in mobile phones. (shady!) I picked up a T-Mobile G1 around May 2009 as I was making the move up to the real world. (at Deluxe Digital, if anyone was wondering) By the end of 2009, the G1 hardware was just way too slow, and the phone had a tendency to be quite unresponsive when I needed it, so I preordered a Nokia N900 for (relatively) cheap off Amazon. It arrived January and all was well, until Google I/O. What I wasn't expecting was for Google to give out more free phones. I received a Motorola Droid around April, having only gotten perhaps 2 months of use out of the poor N900, (Sorry! I like Maemo 5, I really do!) before switching to the new Droid. See the thing is, Google also gave out a month of free unlimited service with the phones, and since I have been using Google Voice (which I highly recommend by the way) since not long after picking up the G1, it was trivial to switch phones. Well, Google decided to give out the HTC EVO 4G to all Google I/O attendees as well, (sucks for Verizon) so now here I am with 4 smartphones, having paid maybe $600 total for them. What's a guy to do with all these extra phones?
Anyway, long story short, I sold the N900 for a MyTouch 3G plus cash, and promptly used the cash to help buy a Nexus One. Now I have 5 phones. Great.
By the way if you want to buy a used T-Mobile G1, MyTouch 3G, or Motorola Droid, let me know!
