I think after Iris graduated from school, she didn't know what to do with her life so she signed up for army work, which is one of the reasons for how she became a talented sniper.

After she was done, she also left that position. She didn't feel like it was something she wanted to do in life until she ended up with an interest in drawing again.

(this also goes for Issac but he reunited with Conner and Samuel in Military training while Claire and Sam weren't interested)
