Final Project: Business Plan
Mastery Journal, Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution
Now in my tenth month of a twelve-month program, I cannot say anything but great things about Full Sail’s Entertainment Business Master of Science program. This month, I took a course, Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution. I was introduced to many different topics, but I will only mention a select few. To begin, in month one of this program, I had previously set a few goals for myself to ensure I was setting myself up for success. The first goal was to review all of the course materials for the program twelve hours per week. I set that goal for myself so that I would fully understand the distribution process. Needless to say, I did. It enabled me to better grasp such a complex topic that I feel every filmmaker, author, game designer and artist needs to know.
Second, I wanted to know how to make money online with the content that I, or any other creative created. This course nailed it! I was introduced to the wonders of createspace.com. This website has challenged the way the conventional distribution model has run for decades. Prior to this, writers would have to reach out to literary agents and submit a query letter attempting to sell themselves to the agent. The reality is that the agent may not like the sale of the person via the query letter, so in turn, he or she could relatively easily turn them down. I had previously learned the legal reason why no large studio would touch a creatives intellectual property, but now, I do not have to wait on an agent to usher me to the doorstep to what my passion is, which is to create meaningful content.
Later in the month, after having been introduced on how to acquire an agent, I was introduced to the process of constructing a film treatment. Having secured a bachelor’s degree in film, I knew the basis of a film treatment, but I was asked to construct one from an idea that I had created in the class. As I mentioned earlier, createspace.com helps me self-distribute, but by knowing how the conventional process works, it still gives me leverage to be that much more effective. The course moved so quickly, and before I knew it, I was learning about three types of distributors, One-Stop Distributors, rack jobbers, and Independent Distributors. I found myself, still having two courses to take, and I had to stop myself from moving forward too quickly. It is the complete and thorough understanding of everything that matters more than looking into a subject.
To conclude, in a previous class before this course, Advanced Entertainment Law, it was there where I was introduced to five fundamental rights of a copyright. We covered that in the Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution class, but to see how it all steps on each other in a meaningful way, that was the lightbulb going off moment. By taking these two courses alone, I feel really empowered. It is information an empowerment in a particular area of expertise, that separates being a creative and being a creator. It is the knowledge of entertainment business, which maximizes the chances to share my content with the world that takes priority over simply understanding how to create content alone.
