ex husband!toji x sweet!reader
fluff ♡
it’s your week to have megumi, but when you ask toji too help you out a saturday evening, and stay over with megumi. he couldn’t say no, not once he realised his ex-wife was going on a date.
6,5k words
”so, now I don’t want to play with yuji anymore…” megumi mumbles as the two of you are colouring in some blank sheets primary school gave him for homework.
”oh, baby. I’m sure if yuji knew how much you wanted that last cookie, he wouldn’t have taken it.” you run a hand through you’re eight year olds spikey black hair.
”hm,” he shrugs his small shoulders while filling in pikachus tail with precision. ”then, maybe I’ll forgive him…” even though your son was such a little grumpy pie, he was still the most adorable thing you could ask for.
”’gumi, you are such a sweet boy. maybe we can call yuji over tomorrow?” you smile while giving him a kiss on the cheek.
“if I’m not too tired.” he continues colouring, and you just lean back in the kitchen stool, scrolling lazily.
until you get a call.
“hi, toji.” your sweet voice breaks through the ringing, megumis ears perk up immediately.
“where are you going tonight?” he asks with a dark voice. your ex-husband doesn’t spare you a soft conversation, no, he needed to know why you suddenly needed his help.
see, you had texted him this morning, asking if he could jump in with megumi for tonight.
“the babysitter I call sometimes is sick, and I’m going out for a few hours. so I can’t leave ‘gumi alone.”
toji huffs, that wasn’t what he had asked now, was it? he asked you where you were going.
“well, I can’t tonight.” he chuckles, “guess you’ ain’t goin’ nowhere then.”
ever since the divorce you hadn’t asked toji for one favor, not one. and today, when you only need him for a few hours between six and nine, he responds so distantly.
“it’s from six, I promise I’ll make it up to you when it’s your turn to go out!”
“nah, ain’t happenin’, sweetheart.”
your shoulders tense at the nickname but you continue. “it’s only for a few hours, I won’t be out til’ late.” you try reasoning with him but. “I really can’t cancel this date.”
the word slips out you effortlessly, like they didn’t mean anything, like it didn’t matter at all. but toji feels his entire body give out, he could collapse on the floor of his messy apartment right now.
he knew it.
and he was not happy with it at all. a date. he rolls his eyes.
ever since the divorce, toji has been doing everything he possible could to become a better man, for you, for the family.
and it was working, from weekends to full weeks he finally got fifty-fifty custody and he had found a less intimidating work of line. and it was all for you. for megs.
soon, he would be the perfect husband, perfect dad, and the three of you could be happy together again.
but, that future would be completely out of sight if you somehow found yourself some new dude to love.
even though he had already decided he would come over to help you with megumi, literally the second you texted him, he had to tease you until he got the information he wanted.
and now that he knew, he wasn’t so sure he wanted to know more details. not unless he was ready to kill someone.
actually, scratch that, he wanted to know everything.
“a date, huh?” he mocks and you mentally face palm yourself, it felt almost a bit embarrassing to tell your ex-husband about having a date.
telling him made it feel so real.
it felt like toji could see right through you, like he could see past your facade and find right to your desperate attempt at earning the slightest bit of affection.
because, with full honesty, that’s exactly what you were. deperate.
and when shiu, the single dad from megumis school had started flirting with you, it was very hard to pretend not to like the sudden attention.
attention you were deprived of during yours and tojis marrrige, and even more deprived once you got divorced.
“uhm,” you gulp “yeah.” you look down at the hem of your pijama pants, fiddeling with it nervously. scared that toji just might take this as an opportunity to judge you.
but before toji could speak up megumi basically jumps onto you, lips creeping up to the speaker.
“dad! are you coming over tonight?” megumi asks enthusiastically, how could toji try to say no to that sweet voice that usually sounds so monotone.
“yeah, megs’. ‘course I am.” you smile with victory, completely oblivious to the fact that tojis mind was already made up the moment he heard your beautiful voice on the phone.
the day proceeds like normally, until five o’clock rolls around. you were almost ready, just a few simple curls missing in your hair when a heavy set of knocks interrupt you.
when you open the door toji stands there, as tall as ever, hands in his pockets. “hey.” he sends you a cocky grin before finally taking in your appearance.
you looked unbelievable.
with a pair of light washed jeans and a white tanktop already sitting so tightly his eyes hurt looking at your chest, breast almost spilling out. paired with a yellow, flowy, sheer chiffon cardigan.
white manicure and pedicure perfected.
your hair tumbled far down your back, reaching your hip with small curls at the ends.
and he noticed everything, your sugary and gourmand perfume, the effort in your makeup. his heart sinks.
“you look beautiful,” his smirk only grows as you let him inside your apartment. mumbling a small “you never dressed up like that for me...” he wasn’t sure you heard.
you did. but you didn’t have it in you to answer him, because he knew that wasn’t true.
finally, toji got to see the inside of your infamous apartment he drove every week to when getting megumi, only, he was never invited inside.
his curiosity on how you truly lived only grew at your dismissiveness.
and now he got his wonders answered. your apartment smelled just as perfect as you. reminding him of the times where your scent was the only thing engulfing him dead at night when you used to lay beside him.
your house clean and neat, probably where megumi gets his clean-freakness from.
always judging tojis apartment when the little boy was staying with him. small side eyes to the messy kitchen, and subtle hits when toji, yet again, orders take out instead of cooking like you did.
“you don’t need to cook anything for tonight, there’s still left-overs in the fridge.” you continue enlightening toji as you walk him through the apartment.
tojis point exactly. you were just always so prepared, amazing wife, an even better mom.
on the other side of the coin, you were worried toji was silently judging you, like he always did.
always throwing mean or snarky comments like everything bad in his life was your fault, because you iniciated the divorce.
yeah.
the divorce was his kryptonite, apperantly.
”oh, and also don’t let him watch cartoon network after 9 because-“
“because they show adult swim, yeah…yeah. he’s my son too, y’know.” he interrupts. right. you forgot toji never lets you utter a full scentence without interrupting you.
“I’m just making sure,” you breath out and his heart sinks, again. he didn’t mean to sound so… douchebag-ish when he spoke to you, especially not when he remembered your sweet tone.
but he couldn’t help it. and the way you were so nice to him, kind, even when he was being rude made him even angrier.
not only because you are shoving what he had lost all up in his face, but because it was all his fault.
you walk back to your room, telling half-napping megumi that his father was here, he runs out.
you finish adjusting the last curls, putting a pair of white sandals on. it was in the middle of july, and shiu was taking you to some beach bar.
that was all the information you got so you figured you could wear something a little summery.
as you walk out, a small purse in hand, tojis breath hitches and megumi looks up at you from his place on the couch in awe.
“woah! you are so pretty, mom!” he jumps up and runs over to you, hugging you tightly.
you pout at his cuteness, your usually so nonchalant son being very chalant in this moment. “thank you, baby.” you hug him back so tightly.
it really sucked you had to leave him tonight, when it was your week. but you had already cancelled with shiu so many times, you were afraid he thought he was bothering you. and he wasn’t at all.
“be good with daddy, okay?” you say and toji starts making his way over too the both of you.
“he’ll be good,” toji grins, “don’t stay out too long, daddy’s gonna be waitin’,” toji dares to chuckle at you, you should’ve known not to reffer to him as that.
not while you were together, and not while he was standing right infront of you, using it against you. just like now.
you stand kind of stunned as megumi lets go of you and runs back to whatever was occupying him before.
you, again, don’t have it in you to answer toji. not when he was being so silly.
your phone lights up with a text message, it’s shiu saying he’s arrived with his car to pick you up.
“is that your suitor?” toji mutters.
“that’s not what he is…” you look down at your feet. his comments always got you, and you were always left stuttering and wondering why you even decided to let him in, let him close to you again.
“‘sure seems like it.”
“he’s a friend.” you feel the tension building up. “don’t look at me like I’m doing something wrong…”
“m’ not.” he says coldly, but he was, you knew that look so well.
you sigh. “sure, ‘ji.” his brow twitches at the nickname. “I don’t act like this when you go out to bars with your ladies.”
he huffs. “don’t be jealous, sweetheart.” that’s all he could get out, he couldn’t even explain to you that he hadn’t been with another woman since five months ago, aka since your divorce.
but how was he supposed to say that when he knew it wouldn’t change anything, he had to change completely before he could let you in to the man he was becoming.
but what he didn’t understand was that he was only pushing you further away.
“toji, you never grow up, do you?” you whisper exhaustively, turing around and walking out, leaving toji standing in the hallway, alone, wishing he could just shut the fuck up sometimes.
”hm, so she doesn’t talk about me at all?” toji ask his seven year old son, again.
“noooo, dad!” megumi answers annoyed, his father had been asking these supid questions ever since you left.
does she ask about me?
does she miss me?
do you think she thinks about me?
“can you throw the dice now?” megumi asks pushing the ludo dices closer to toji with his hand.
“whatever,” toji grunts.
he had been mentally torturing himself trying to figure out who you were going on this date with, especially when he understood that megumi knew who it was, but won’t tell.
“megs, why won’t ya’ just tell me who it is? is this how you choose to betray your father?” megumi gives toji a deadly look.
“‘cause, your gonna be mean and I like him.” tojis eyes widen, like him? his own son is protecting another man who is about to steal you away. “he is nice to mom..” megumi explains.
so what? toji is also nice, or he can be.
“yeah? well, he ain’t very nice to me.” toji argues huffing out a jelouse breath.
“yes, he is.” megumi throws the dices, moving forward on the game board, knocking one of his fathers green pawns out.
toji sits stunned, not because his son was winning over him in ludo. but because megumi just dropped the hint that toji, apparently, knows the scum that took you out just now.
“megs… do I know this man?” tojis tone sounds nice but there is something scary underneath, and megumi knows better than to tell him the truth, not blatantly anyways.
“perhaps.”
“son, who taught you to treat your own dad like this.”
“you did, this is how you always answer my question.”
“yeah, yeah.” toji frowns. “what do you want then, huh? money?”
megumi smiles devilishly. “I want to watch the new ghost strike movie mom won’t let me see.”
and after two hours of nothing but ninjas, ghosts and gory action toji and megumi finally walk out the theatres with a half eaten popcorn bucket.
within minutes they were home again, cartoons on in the background as toji warms up some of the rice and stew you made this morning.
“so, ‘deal’s a deal.” toji sits back on the couch, handing megumi a bowl and a spoon.
“you know nobara, from school?” megumi asks, which toji hums in response to, of course he knew that little troublemaker from megumis class.
how could he not, she was always up to something, that girl.
“yeah well… it’s shiu… her dad.” megumi finally says in between bites.
tojis almost breaks the bowl in his hand.
fucking shiu, ha!
that sleezy little bastard.
toji knew shiu very well, he used to train with him in the fight gym near his apartment. they were similar in age and always complained about the kids together.
so, imagine tojis suprise when he finds out, that jackass is the one treating his ex-wife on fancy dates.
his beautiful, incredible, young ex-wife was being hit on by shiu. toji wanted to hurl.
“ha.” is all toji responds with and megumi immediately turns his head sending his father a warning look.
“dad, don’t hurt him.” megumi demands.
“nah, I won’t.” tojis jaw clenches as he utters those words megumi can’t seem to really believe in.
a while into the date you were sitting on a bar stool, next to shiu, sipping on mocktails, enjoying the way shius eyes never seemed to leave you. they didn’t all night.
oh how you missed being looked at like that.
“you should come over for dinner sometime, the kids can play together.” shiu suggests, reffering to your previous conversation about how hard it is to make plans when it’s your week with the kids, because you don’t really want to leave them.
you light up. “shiu, that sounds so great, I really think megumi would like it too!” he smiles at how cute you were.
shiu always thought that, ever since primary school started and he saw you on the pta meetings.
at first, when he started training with toji he didn’t know that the ex-wife toji was reffering to was, well… you.
but, when he sneakily found out you were single, and that toji hadn’t even stepped foot in your new apartment. telling him you were really over.
shiu couldn’t help himself.
you were way too beautiful.
the alcoholfree drink you were sipping on tasted so good you noted to make a citrus and pinapple-y drink for yourself some day.
shiu looks at you with pure interest, his face was so close to your face, the one currently leaning closer to your tall glass. ugh. what a beauty he thought.
you had his mind all scrambled with those dangerous eyes looking right back up on him and those plump lips, perfectly wrapped around the straw of your drink.
he could almost kiss you-
“kong?” a voice interrupts the soft moment between you and shiu. a woman, looking absolutely gasped.
shiu visibly glitches as he tries to answer, shock written all over his face. “h-hey.” he clears his throat.
“okay, wow.” the woman eyes you up and down, a mean face on, “didn’t you just get out of that situation with your wife?”
wife?
you were pretty sure shiu was divorced. you had seen him and nobaras mom before, even met her… she said it herself.
they seemed good, so what was this fuss all about.
“keiko, uhm… this is just a friend, from nobaras school.” he explains, his usual steady demeanour faltering.
just a friend, huh. you were stupid to think otherwise.
“this is crazy!” she points a finger at him. “your wife was right about you! ugh!” she shrieks before stomping away.
“uh,” shiu gulps, not daring to look at you. “-that was a friend of my ex-wifes.”
“shiu, it didn’t sound like she was an ex… I didn’t know- I should go.” you stumble over your words.
how stupid of you to think it was this simple.
that shiu wasn’t just like every other man out there.
“no, uhm… she was talking about my second wife… not nobaras mother.” he mumbles, while clearing his throat, ashamed.
you knew shiu was a bit older than you, even older than toji. but when did he have time to meet yet another woman, and marry her nevertheless.
“we’re still going through with the divorce-“ he pauses when he sees the hurt look on your usally cheery. “it’s complicated.” you sigh.
“I think, I just need to go home now.” you whisper. exhausted about how the men you seem to attract never seem to have their stuff figured out.
such bad luck you had.
“yeah, sure… I’ll drive you.”
even though you really didn’t want to, there was no other way for you to get home, so you let him.
the car ride was silent and you didn’t plan on saying anything at all, never again, really. his chances were burnt away. interest immediately lost.
what a poor excuse of a man.
to think he invited you over for dinner, what? so you could meet his wife face too face. what a joke.
once you reach your apartment you can’t help but mutter a small, “thank you.”
not becuase you were necessarily happy with the night, or because he deserved a thank you. but because your manners told you to, and you were thankful that whatever this thing between the two of you was, ended before it went any further.
your sandals flip flop on the stairs as you make your way to your floor. keys rattling as you reach to open the door, only to see the most light hearted sight you’ve seen this week.
toji was sprawled on the couch, legs set wide apart with megumis arms around his torso, and his chin resting on your little boys head. they were both out, completely exhausted it seemed like.
how cute.
even something so simple as seeing the two of them together again, heated your entire body up, because it reminded you of your early days together.
and even though you already knew toji was a good father, great even. one that always showed up for megumi, even though he pretended he didnt care.
it was just such a long time ago you got to see the two of them together yourself, besides the occasional pictures you got.
you sigh as you look over at the tv, rick and morty was on quitely on cartoon network.
“toji, toji…” you whisper comically as you start picking up the abandoned bowls on the table.
literally the one thing you asked him for was not the cartoon network. but it only earns you a chuckle.
one loud enough for toji to stirr awake. “hey,” his dark, new awoken voice startled you. “welcome back.” he smugly says.
“hi,” you smile sweetly. tojis immediate reaction is to frown, you looked way too happy.
“guessin’ the date went good.” he snarls.
you chuckle, “no, it was terrible, actually.” toji sits up quickly at your confession.
“do I gotta’ beat that dicks ass?” he asks, tone quite serious.
“no, that’s fine. I should’ve expected it.” you laugh. “I mean, since when do things ever work out in my favor, right?” your voice is still sweet and quiet.
like you were making a light hearted joke, but there is something bittersweet laced under there.
maybe it was the truth about it all, but toji noticed it anyway.
“I mean, just look at us.” you mumble, walking into the kitchen with the dirty dishes. that hit toji right in the chest.
he sank back into the couch.
here he was, thinking about what kind of bastard shiu must’ve been, when he was the one that probably took the biggest toll on your heart.
he had no right to judge, especially not if shius the one you wanted to be with.
“hey-“ he calls out to you, carefully peeling megumi off so he could walk up to you. “-if shius the kind of man you want to be with, I’m not here to judge you…” he admitts, clawing at the back of his neck.
you quickly look over to him, a weird feeling settling in your chest.
tojis calm words felt somewhat comforting, comforting enough for you to open up about the night.
“he isn’t divorced yet,” you say coldly. washing the dishes not meeting tojis eyes again.
“huh?” he genuinely gets confused. “yeah he is, talked to his ex-wife just last week.”
“no, with his second wife…” you explain.
oh, what an idiot. toji thinks.
“well, I wasn’t gonna say this but… you were too good for him, princess.” he adds.
whatever…you shake your head. “and according to you who is good enough for me? toji fushiguro, right?” you chuckle.
“nah, he’s the worst,” that earns him a real giggle from your beautiful lips. his heart literally flutters at the sound.
you miss the sound of small feet tapping against the floor until you see, in the corner of your eyes, megumi getting hoisted up onto the counter by toji.
the small intruder was rubbing his eyes with his tiny hands. “what are you two talking about?”
“that your daddy is a little bandit.” you walk over to megumi, ruffling his hair. “just like you, being awake after bedtime.” toji just watches you from next to megumi.
his little family. it sure felt like the good ol’ days for him. standing like this, all three of you.
he can’t even remember th last time it was like this, but he wished he did.
because it hurt him knowing he was taking it all for granted back then.
“yeah, because mommy is so perfect, right?” toji jokes, rolling his eyes playfully, trying to get megumi to agree with his sarcasm, but megumi only pushes his arm. “hey-!”
“mom is perfect.” he mumbles and you give him a tight hug.
after a few moments of funny banter you finally tuck megumi in, his eyes all droopy as he says one last statement before dozing off.
“maybe, dad can come over here more often… so we are together.” and your heart finally sinks.
your poor little boy. all he wanted was the three of you together again.
something you wanted too.
and unbeknownst to you, so did toji.
but it was something the two of you would never say out loud.
and even though you didn’t formally agree to it, or even talk about it. you started inviting toji over for dinner here and there, and toji showed up more often, lingering longer during pick ups.
