What Could've Been
Short drabble about platonic yandere Tim failing to become ExJuvenile Reader's little brother. Not proof read, kinda gave up at the end. TW: Mentions of child abandonment, mentions of ExJuvie being an ex alcoholic, emotional betrayal, unhealthy coping mechanisms
You used to be a passive caretaker for Tim when he first joined the manor.
Alfred was too busy with Bruce and Dick to really care for the skinny kid; plus, Alfred was old school and believed that a "soldier" needs to be self-sufficient. It didn't matter if said soldier was a skinny and sleep deprived 13 year old or a man almost in his 30s running around in a stupid armored bat costume, he had his expectations.
It was bullshit.
So, you took it upon yourself to try and help the kid. You didn't get too close, still emotionally raw from being forced to return to Gotham after being practically abandoned for a year in Metropolis, but you made sure he was fed, taught him how to properly clean a wound and patch it up, and would check on him during the night, making sure that he had a blanket wrapped snugly around him.
You hate to admit it, but you were slowly becoming fond of the strange kid. Back then, you could feel a ghost of a smile on your lips as you helped him quietly. It was almost healing in a way, taking care of someone… maybe you and he could be siblings… maybe you could finally have someone in the manor to call your family…
That thought scared you as much as it gave you hope.
'Maybe I can finally have a family again… Maybe I won't be alone anymore..'
With that hope, you started to try and be a part of the household again, tried to go to smaller events that Tim would go to. Tried to talk to him more to gain a better connection and tried to regain control of your life and health after being forced back to Gotham.
But.. it didn't last.
One comment.
One comment was all it took for the house of cards to come toppling down.
You were silently walking down the hall, keeping your step light out of habit, when you heard Tim and Alfred talking in the library. You were planning to just walk away and give them privacy, but froze when you heard Tim say your name.
"I like them, but look at them; they clearly are on something or were on something. I hate to say it, but let's be honest, they're a liability waiting to happen."
A liability waiting to happen.
A liability waiting to happen.
A liability waiting to happen.
A FUCKING liability waiting to happen.
Is that how you are seen? An unreliable ex addict? You haven't had a drop of alcohol in almost a year! And no thanks to Alfred and that hellhole he called a rehab that tried to make you relapse!
You gritted your teeth, digging your nails into your palms as you silently left the hallway, using one of the servant passages to get to your room faster as your body shook and heart ached.
Why couldn't you have a family? Why do you keep doing this to yourself? Why do you keep making yourself have hope when there's none? You aren't like them. You will never be like them.
So why did you try?…
…Why do you keep trying to find someone in this manor that won't hurt you…
'Lets face it, you will never find family or connection here.' You thought as you stood up, grabbing some cash you had and a coat as you walked to a familiar hidden door on your side of the manor. As you opened the door to the abandoned tunnels that connected the manor to Gotham, you gently kissed the tips of your fingers and tapped them on the door's frame—a silent ritual that your mom started when you both lived together that you now continue—and began your familiar trek through the tunnels.
You needed to get out of the manor, needed to go to the one place that made you feel good and confident, where you could be as ugly and raw as you felt. The one place that blessed you as much as it cursed you.
The Pit.
'They will never change… why should you?'
